I'm not sure if a junk drawer is a global thing, but at 60 years of age, it has always been part of my life.
My wife hates the drawer, but uses it to store bric-a-brac. It makes a unique sound when we dig for some item and when I hear that noise, I always tell her that the junk drawer always delivers.
My son would roll his eyes whenever I told him to look in the drawer, yet he usually struck gold. Now that he has a family and after a kitchen remodel, he has 3 junk drawers.
Various types of tape, rulers, grandkid stuff, all types of screwdrivers and pliers. Dig deep enough and you will find a large selection of screws and every hex wrench that ever came with flatpack furniture builds.
