If your 1984 is an East Coast car, I am most likely the one that put it through it's paces on the chassis dyno after it came off of the ship (during it's pre-delivery to the dealership inspection).

Cool gig working for porsche NA, especially in the oil pumper years. Not many can say they have driven a 959 either. I had a great time at the porsche experience center last year driving a gt4RS on their track.

Since my 930 is 84 there were no USDM versions. It is euro market/grey market car. No usdm 930s from 1980-1985 due to emissions requirements. They came back to the US for 1986 with Cats and fuel trim control on the Bosch Cis system. Tons of grey market 930s in the us however.

I am not for a road car either, but am for racing and exciting sound.
For a road car electric is even better since it produces torque from a standstill over a really broad speed range, since it isn't depending on the oxygen flow rate, so instant throttle response and ease of overtaking and no need to stir a gearbox...

Were is the fun in not stirring the gearbox?
When I am spending 8-13 hours (10-15 minute breaks every 2 or so, stretch legs, swap drivers) in a vehicle, I want a gear box to play with.

That is my sort of road, but that car sounds awful to me (a turbo flat-4) even though very powerful and effective.

04 sti was one of the most fun cars ive owned, super short gearing and insane traction. Can dial out some of the understeer. Felt like driving a real life Homologation special for modest sedan money. 20+ years ago it felt like a legitimately fast car as well. My heart lies with true sports cars but hot hatches and ralleye specials are the best road cars. We mostly lost them in the US unfortunately. GR corollas and CTRs are modern semi equivalents I guess but expensive and too refined. My daily driver now is an inexpensive focus ST, which I have found surprisingly fun. Can be driven near its limits without risking Life and jailtime .

I think in 25 years people will be undoing 911 safari (and backdate) builds, not that I am against them and I fully support the hobby of modifying cars.

in the 70s and 80s everybody was forward dating porches to look newer or to turbo bodywork, most of those cars are put back closer to original these days

2000-now tons of newer cars are being or have been backdated and hotrodded, really accelerated when singer hit the scene. My opinion is these are starting to fall out of favor (singer being a bit different and I think will always be desirable).

2010 maybe, the "safari all the cars" started happening

No snobbery towards originality here, I just think its interesting aside that many cars are timeless but modifying trends change.

Nice its hard to find a more versatile car than a wrx> I also had an 06 Wagon which I drove more than any other car ive ever owned ~150k miles. Wish I would have kept it but it was getting old enough to need things here and there and I always like to have a care free daily. Hey subaru, bring back the manual turbo wagon!

I'd be a buyer, I could skip the tent. A (rather large) dirt biking friend used a Golf wagon for awhile and he could sleep in it, I was always jealous when I was setting up my tent. Other friends have vans, I'd rather sleep on the dirt than drive a van.

Sadly it's not mine. It's my friend's. But I have driven it. It feels like a Lotus Elise, but with some creature comforts. Like: it's easy to get in, there is air cond, there is decent storage in the boot, and it's nowhere as noisy as an Elise. BUT ... I am not a fan of the styling, it looks really generic. And the exhaust note is nothing special. I would much rather have this:

It ticks all the boxes except that it has a major tram tracking problem and it doesn't go where you want it to go. Admittedly that is a rather major problem.

The Alfa is a bit nicer styling but the Alpine is a much better car, and I still like the styling.

Duncan Coulthard (bro of David) has an Alpine with a big wing, or rather it’s his wife’s car I should say and I think it looks absolutely ace, it’s so tiny when parked next to other cars in town, it has a nice raspy but growly exhaust note (or so I think)

Went to school with David and when he won the Renault championship at 17 they gave him a Renault 5 GT Turbo so that’s how I discovered I'd never ever…..ever be a racing car driver as sitting next to David as he hooned that tiny pocket rocket around galloway showed my driving skills to be somewhat lacking, then again i didn't have the upbringing and experience of racing karts since a young age, I raced moto-x round muddy fields throughout the UK from a young age which never had quite the same racing glamour nor recognition attached to it, Kawasaki uk did give me free motocross bikes so I guess I did ok
