My city fuel economy went up from 15.8 mpg to 16.2 mpg, hwy FE remained the same (HWY mpg depends a lot on if one is going 100 miles [about 19 unloaded]) or 600 miles (about 24 unloaded)

Welcome to the club of <20mpg, but your SC gas prices are somewhere near 30% (~$2) cheaper than here in SoCal.
So, your 16mpg would be equivalent to me getting around 11mpg for my LS2 V8 (that currently averages around 16mpg).

The question is whether I am easing-off on the use of my go-pedal... to save on the $6.89/gallon for 91 Octane?
Heck, NO!
I am guessing by the end of next week, 91 Octane will over $7.

My car is isn't anything special but I love it. It's a 2024 Nissan Sentra SV. I've had it 18 months and it has 5600 miles on it. Since retiring I stay home most of the time. It's stylish to me and it rides nice for a compact car, and the Nissan zero gravity seats are extremely comfortable, sitting in it feels like they were made just for me.

My only concern when I bought it was Nissan's history of CVT transmission issues. Supposedly the issues have been largely resolved. I hope so.

There I had thought of you as a proper 'gear-head' and now you drop the bombshell that you drove a friggin' CVT for 450kMiles.

Yes, it was a VW ID.Buzz EV w/a retro design inspired by the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 (T1) Microbus.
Although contrary to the online information, this local dude's ID.Buzz has a placard saying "California Edition" but none supposed to exist.
It really has a very pleasing (and nostalgic-ish) look to it but -from my understanding- it was too costly (loaded @$75k) and did not have enough range (~230mile?).
It may be back for 2027 and possibly de-contented to lower the MSRP.

Many years ago, I wanted a sports car. I test drove a Merc 500SL. That thing was incredible in a straight line, but it just didn't want to turn. It felt like I was piloting a speedboat. I ended up with a Porsche Boxster. The capabilities of that car far exceeded mine, you can go around a corner so fast that I always chickened out while the car still had more to give.

After 20 months of ownership I'm 6 miles away from hitting 6K on the odometer of my '24. I definitely plan on having the CVT fluid changed at 30K. Love this car.

I lifted our 24 Subaru CrossTrek 1&1/2" in the back & 2" in the front before I brought it home from the dealership in May of 24. We have 20K on it. Waiting on the warranty to run out so I can do some other mods on it. Have to be careful to not exceed the power rating of the CVT.

This 1995 Supra (6-speed, no turbo) was practically bullet-proof: Even with a few track-days during its ownership.
Then it got totaled and insurance had to pay dearly for the "Actual Cash Replacement Value" coverage (not my own fault).

Give me an old camper one (pre water cooled) and put in a 180 HP type IV 2300 cc engine and a 5 speed transaxle (with a Quaife positrak) from a 914 and I can tow a kitchen trailer with a boat on top, a scrambler motorcycle on the back & carry any amount of fuel that I need to go anywhere (overlanding or otherwise) for weeks at a time.
I never think about staying on the roadways. Just the opposite.
Solar, wind, off the grid. My mother is 92 and a WWII survivor (from the time she was 6-11) in Austria. Getting out of Salzburg and living off the land in the country was the solution to survival.

In Saipan I had a 1980 300D that I ran primarily from the Asian restaurants waste cooking oil (20-25% diesel, the rest cooking oil filtered though a paint filter and put in a 55 gallon drum for the car. The mechanical fuel injection handled it fine (it never gets cold there). The body structure of their cars then was very, very good.

The big problem of the VW modular engines was their extreme weight. Both blocks and heads had a lot of metal in them because of their layout.
One of the German tuners made a racing version of the W12 in the late 1990s, when I was consulting for Lola Cars, and it was both too wide to go into the Lola B98-10 production sports car they were making then without losing structural integrity and 200kg heavier (iirc, that seems a lot now I write it down!) than the Heini Mader modified BMW V8 that was offered at the same time...

The Bugatti offered with the W16 originally weighed over 2 tonnes!
I know a senior engineer who worked there back then.

There are 2 models available here, short and long wheelbase, and 2 motor specs, I like it a lot but have no need of something that big any more.

In 1989, a buddy inherited an old VW microBus (21 window) which he kept, possibly as a project car, which ended up being a restoMod.
He figured to drop-in a Porsche 2.4L boxer6, which required the 911E transaxle, which required more mods to the suspension/steering, which required beefing-up the [semi-] unitized body...
...Thirty months later, this old, junker, 'hippie-bus' was turned into a beautiful (blue-bottom/white-top) Type2 'surfer-bus'.
On a rainy day, we rolled it out of his garage with the Porsche signature cookie-cutter wheels and its steering wheel...
Its maiden, surfing voyage was a 420-mile trek on PCH to Half Moon Bay.
