So just about 2 months ago I managed to snag an Onyx Producer 2-2 for half price, brand new, because the audio store near me was letting go of old stock. I have it using a Mackie 89-D microphone and so far it's doing well. Should I get the Topping E2X2 or should I just keep my current interface? Seeing as how the Onyx Producer 2-2 is from 2018 I suspect that there is some benefit to get the E2X2 which newer and also from a company known for their technicalities. Plus if I upgrade my mic down the line, the Topping would do better than the Onyx no?

Thanks for reading.

What specific issue are you looking to solve with the E2x2?

Would switching to the E2x2 solve that issue?

Unless you have concrete answers to those questions, you're better off not buying.

I don't know about these specific devices...

Generally, these interfaces are similar in performance, and the performance is usually fine. The main thing is the preamp - Noise and gain. Noise specs are tricky because there is more than one way to measure & specify so you need independent-comparable measurements. Many of these things don't have enough gain for dynamic mics. (Condenser mics are around 20dB hotter.)

Again, I didn't research these two devices but a nice feature is direct-hardware zero-latency monitoring. If you monitor through the computer there is always SOME latency (delay) and it can be difficult to "perform" with a delay in your headphones.

It looks like the Topping has better metering, but the fact is digital recording levels are not at all critical as long as you avoid clipping. ...We can get a little obsessed watching meters. ...In the analog days it was a LOT more important.

I may just replace my DX5 and just have a one box solution for my speakers and my headphones. Run everything through the Topping which does have better internals for duties other than the ADC.

The adc of the Topping are very nice, but if you are happy with the unit, keep it

Also, I wouly consider the e4x4, small price increase and twice the io.

I started reading the master review thread of the e2x2 and it seems it may have some issues.
