Sennheiser HDB 630

Based on measurements and my personal experience, I think the ClosedBacks are borderline junk, except for maybe three models, two of which are very expensive.

…. Can I have a good ClosedBack? Sure, but at a high price and with poor external isolation (DanClark), without any features that make it flexible.
I have the DCA Noires, and compared them to the 630s by listening to a London Grammar album all the way thru with both headsets. The Noires didn’t have the punch or rumble, but they extended much further than any Sennheiser open back. On the other hand, I found the Noires’ treble more accurate and fun, while both isolated more than adequately, and much better than open backs…

I've got mine a week now and am extremely happy with how it sounds. But what I find a bit weird though, is that for a sample rate of 44.1kHz, the bit depth is limited to 16 bits. But probably not audible though. Availabe formats as reported by Audio MIDI setup on my mac:

So I originally had some Sony XM3's I got for work due to the machines being exceedingly noisy. Not needing ear protection, not really, but close, so I bought those and used them for over a year, the ANC was great. The sound was definitely too bassy. Comfort was excellent. Eventually I started having issues with the 3.5mm connection, and without bothering to understand it was my cable gone bad, I went into looking for something new.

I've always been a Sennheiser headphone guy, since I got the Sennheiser PC350's in 2010. For a gaming headset, it was excellent, I even used Hero's Mod, for anyone who knows what that is. Eventually I purchased a pair of dedicated HD598SE when I saw an excellent sale. They were great for the uses I have for headphones. Comfort was kind of awkward honestly, but the sound was so good you just don't really care.

So naturally I thought to see if there were any ANC Headphones for Sennheiser, I had naturally went Sony due to both price and a lot of people at work having them. I saw the Momentum 3's and saw a decent discount(at the time, though still more expensive than the XM series).

They took abit of getting used to. Clamping force was harsh, and yet would also slide along the top of my head when I bent down to pick something up. I mainly used them for listening to music near the machines or gaming on my laptop / handheld device while on break.

For some reason USB-C was never really useable with the M3s. There were two separate volumes, the headphone volume and the desktop volume, and moving one, moved both, despite being at different levels, it was very difficult to find an appropriate volume level and they usually ended up sounding weirdly robotic this way. Fuzzy. 3.5mm worked fine, which my laptop had, two separate volumes but I could operate them independently thankfully, so I could settle on a sweet spot. Wirelessly to my phone or Steam Deck was great, because they supported AptX-LL.

The ANC waas a noticeable step down from Sony's though, and while a little frustrating, they sounded a lot better overall.

I looked into the M4's eventually but didn't seem like a worthy upgrade, so I was gonna hold out for the M5's and hopefully some of my nitpicks would be fixed.

Enter the HBD 630s, randomly mentioned in the #audio channel of one of my Discords. I start watching videos and looking them up almost immediately. The price is high but I have been working a lot of hours and wanted something new. I'd heard HD6xx series thrown a lot in terms of audio quality, and was interested. So with only a few days of flip-flopping, I bought a pair. They arrived last Friday.

They felt premium, and a hard case was a nice change over the soft case of the M3's. The included Dongle was a good plus as well, though my phone supports AptX Adaptive and other such codecs. I may find a use for it some day. I guess on my Steam Deck, since AptX-LL support is gone from the 630s, sadly. Doesn't work on the Switch 2 as far as I could see.

As for the sound, fantastic. They do remind me of the HD600s, which I also own and love, except with more bass and obviously not as wide a a soundstage due to being closed back. For ANC headphones on the go? That's incredible. The ANC is better than the M3s by a decent amount, but I'd say the XM3's might even still be better in that regard. A trade-off for incredible wireless sound quality.

Of note, the USB-C connection works pretty great on my laptop, though it's weird how I only need the volume exceedingly low to get ear-splitting levels, like 20-25% to get near to the level you can cause hearing damage, making my question what the hell the other 75% is for. But it's very useable this way and you get 24/96khz, so not bad.

Sadly the 3.5mm connection is completely useless, I have no idea what they did, but when connecting it to my laptop, everything sounds like it's using SBC Bluetooth or something, it just sounds incredibly artificial. I am annoyed at this, given the price of the headphones...but it's honestly a minor gripe. I wonder why even bother including it, when every review I've also seen mentions it sounding bad?

Overall, I am pretty happy, low clamping force, great ANC, amazing sound, and awesome battery life. Comfortable out of the box, unlike many headphones. As for the price, 499$ is steep. I got a slight discount, but even so, I imagine in 2-3 years when these are 300-350$ range, they will see an exceedingly high boost in sales. I have the money to spare though.

A very worthwhile upgrade over the M3's, I would say their soundstage seems weirdly smaller though. I highly recommend if you got the money.

Do you not still have the “two volume controls” issue with the 630s’ UBC connection? It was there for me when I connected my iPad’s USB, but I didn’t have any loudness issue with setting the source of the digital data to max volume… much like I do when connecting my iPad’s USB (or DAP) to my headphone DAC/amp stack…

Enjoy the music!

I don't, at least on my laptop they appear to be synced. I have been hearing a lot of issues with Apple devices though, they never play nice with anything.

It's a strange review, they're reviewing the BTD 700. like some kind of special dongle, despite the fact that this is the most ordinary Bluetooth 5.4 transmitter with a larger set of codecs than needed for the 630. So that's what I wanted to emphasize. when the review describes the increase in quality, they express the delight of inexperienced testers, whether they did not understand that they got it not so much because of the BTD 700. but simply turned on the mode with a high 24/96 stream descriptivity, that's all. You will get exactly the same effect with any other transmitter that supports Aptx AD/HD. That's what I did with my pair of Momentum 4 by connecting them to a simple UGREEN BT501 transmitter for $9. In general, it seemed strange to me that the HDB630 kit included expensive and unnecessary codecs. And in general, the HDB630 doesn't look much better than the M4, but it's $250 more expensive.

The BTD 700 Bt dongle isn’t solely for the HDB 630, and $500 was the MSRP for the M4 headphones when they were released, which means, corrected for inflation, Sennheiser put the 630s into the market for less MSRP, AND you get a $60 Bt dongle to boot!

Not gonna lie, this reads like cope. And I'm planning to get the 630s as soon as I can.

I don't think it's fair to add the price of the BTD700 in the price of the HDB630 at all. Similar dongles routinely sell for for 20-30 bucks.

I don't think the HDB 630 is a good deal, and that's speaking as someone who bought a pair. They are just a fairly unique proposition on the market and Sennheiser is pricing accordingly to what people will pay for it.

Complain as you like about the price, but here in the US nobody can keep them in stock as it is.

They felt premium
Well, when I had them on hands last month at a show, I'd kindly say I begg to differ. They absolutely do not feel like 500€ headphones in my book. Not even half that.

And they are in stock/ready to ship pretty much everywhere here in EU. I don't think it is relative to some tremendously high demand.

They aren't in stock everywhere? When I searched for a pair last week, only one place had them. The usual suspects, Son-Video, Homecinema, la Fnac... no one had them. I ended up getting a pair from a more traditional hifi shop rather than a big online shop.

500 EUR is nearly 600 USD, so it is a worse proposition still for you.

My bad, I stand corrected. ! Was written "in stock" in my search feeds, but yeah, it is only available for preorder. Fnac says they have it in two days. HCS, plan stocks for November 25. But on the other hand, even Sennheiser store announce "within two weeks".

Economy doesn't work that way. 500€ is 500€. And 600 USD is 600 USD. You can't just convert currencies out of their own context.

Yeah, they are getting restocked. Still, that indicates the first batch sold out before the restock. Not that it really means anything since we don't know how much stock Sennheiser build up before the release.

Of course, but this is not the place to get into regional cost of living, VAT, etc. etc.

The pricing is higher than many noise canceling closed backs, but it is inline with the HD-6xx product lines. For example, the 660S2 retails for $675, although it is on sale right now. The HDB 630 costs notably less than the other noise canceling closed backs aimed at the audiophile market, FWIW. Most reports say it sounds better than any other noise canceling closed back. The EQ app looks to be significantly better than any other I've seen. I'll probably get one, but am hoping to hear one at NYC CanJam next year first. The dongle may be unnecessary for most users, but audiophiles are obsessed with lossless audio and that is their target market for this product.
