Hello! I'm planning to buy an HD650 and there are three versions currently on the market, listed in chronological order of production. Which version do you think I should buy, and are there any differences in sound quality? The 2020 version (the newest) seems to be in better condition than the other two! Thank you very much!

Yes, there are differences in sound.
The grey one has a really nice box but the foam in the driver is likely to have gone gooey and does not work as designed.
Pads may also have softened up. Has a low clamping force and sounds 'warmer' than the current ones.
Most likely this is the 'black silk' variant.
When it is used the pads may have to be changed or have been already.
The newer one (silver/white silk) probably has more life on it (rear and front foam) and pads may be in a better condition.
The sound is slightly less 'warm'. Depending on the production date the sound can differ a bit.
Some might have cracked paint on the headband.
The newer ones (simple box) have higher clamping force and different pads and yet again a different sound.
If I would have to buy one again I would go for the newest version (bottom box).

Not the ones in the rear of the driver.
Dam first time I've heard about this, does this plague all variations given enough time?

It only has some influence on the lower mids and differs in effect that pad-wear does (the thickness/firmness of the pads).
The slight changes happen gradually over years/decades and is not sound degrading.
There are people removing the foams as it makes the sound a little warmer. I would not recommend this because the foam also prevents dust particles to enter the driver and can creep into the air-gap of the magnet.
They call this the KISS mod. They also cut away a piece of plastic holding the foam piece and start sticking dynamat all over the driver believing this 'improves sound'.
