Sennheiser HD620S

Listening to my pair now via my HDV820. Too soon to tell anything definitive. Needs some hours but these are my first Senn closed back cans. Long time owner of 650 and new owner of 800S. Initial thoughts are warm sound with pronounced bass. Listening to Fourplay Elixir.

Can anyone comment on the depth of the pads? I had a pair of 560S some time ago but returned them since my ears touched (barely) the little plastic protrusion in the earcup. My 660S2 and my 800S are very comfortable for me, so I am hoping this 620 might be as well. Thx

HD620S:
Inner Pad dimensions: depth rear = 26mm, depth front = 26mm, Width = 48mm, height = 70mm, oval

HD560S:
Inner Pad dimensions: depth rear = 23mm, depth front = 21mm , Width = 42mm, height = 71mm, oval

so... HD620S is 3mm deeper (measured at the 'hump' to the uncompressed pad) but the HD620S pad is a bit softer so compresses a bit more.

I’m quite surprised that the HD620s pads are only 3mm deeper than HD560s as they feel much more comfortable to my ears than HD560s (>2022).

I managed to listen to them and compare to directly to HD800S, DCA Aeon 2 Noire and Sony WH1000 just to reset my ears. Overall they're not bad as far as closed back dynamic headphones go, but compared to DCA it's really no contest in favor to the Aeons. Comfort wise they are stiff and clamp my head really tight, but ears are rather relaxed inside the cups, better than HD560 but I still wouldn't call them comfortable. Bas exist and it's as much as I can say about it, it's neither deep, nor clear or powerful, but it's fine. Midrange is good up to 3kHz or so, above that there seems like a some comb filtering is going on, some parts of the spectrum are pushed forward, some disappear making them sound weird up there. Then there's a peak up top which is rather piercing. I wanted to like them but I didn't. DCA was just better in every way, from comfort to balance and stereo effects, their bass is to die for and overall I felt instant relief when swapping to them. Unfortunately this means I need to demo DCA E3s.

I have owned these for about 3 weeks and am positively surprised by how much I like them.
Now this is coming from a man who doesn’t care for closedback headphones, so keep that in mind.

First of all: this is not a closedback HD600..if anything it’s more like a closedback HD650; the added bass alongside a nice warm treble adds up to too much lushness for a 600. Nahh think 650 on a bit of testosterone.
Other than that I am really happy about a) owning something closed that doesn’t necessarily sound like a closedback and b) the wonderful comfort and build quality compared to my previous K371.

I've been using these for a bit, trying to find something with a wider soundstage than the DCA Aeon Closed X but still closed. To my ears, the 620s have exactly the same imaging/soundstage effect as the DCAs, but sound much clearer. I wish there was a definitive choice.

You will need to resort to software I'm afraid.

I have a narrow head (which gives me fit issues with many headphones) and had the potential problem that @solderdude warned about in his excellent 620S DIY audio heaven review. There was a gap between the bottom of the pad and my neck or jaw bone, which is obviously disastrous for getting a seal. I also find the five series chassis to be not quite as tight-fitting as that of the six series. Returned unfortunately.

On my (average width) head the pads just barely make contact with the skin at the near my jaw when the headband padding is resting on the top of my head. due to the limited tilt. So perhaps not all people may be able to get a perfect seal when wearing the headphone with the padding on top of the head and the sliders not extended (much). Proper seal is not much of a problem with open headphones but for closed headphones this is an issue. The limited tilt probably has to do with the looks but I would have liked to see a bit larger tilt range. A way out for me was to adjust the height of the headphone (sliders pulled outwards 5 notches) so that the headband padding is resting more towards the front of the head.
Just make sure there is no gap near the neck (bottom part of the pads).
The padding is replaceable. It is mounted on the headband using double-sided adhesive tape.

Have a read in this thread.

I recently bought this headphones and i find them extremely pleasing, even compared to the hd650, can't wait to read Amir's review.
Based on the review of diy heaven i used this eq which for the moment satisfies me, i'd be glad to see the eq suggested by Amir

I've just bought a pair based on your review @solderdude. Was/am also interested in the yamaha MT8 but so little info / reviews and no measurements anywhere. I se you did the MT7 (I have the MT5 but not really a fan) and you made a comment in the summary that the MT8s were very different to both. Any plans to measure them??

No plans unless someone sends one in to be measured. :)

I thought you might say that. If you were in the UK I could do that, otherwise by the time I got them back it would be too late to return them if they turned out to be disappointing...I'm probably going to have to try them out, with some yaxi pads because I have a thing about yamaha stuff (especially guitars)

Not sure how to interpret those graphs, doesn't look like they were done on the same instrument?
I see a problem though in the midband on both plots, so maybe not as flat as Yamaha hoped. Bass looks OK though. Wonder what it's distortion / spl characteristics are like.

That's basically what happens when one just puts a headphone on a fixture and sweeps it.
There is no reference (well Sonarworks uses their own).
Also only frequency response is measured but unclear at what level. Distortion, resonances, seal, target curve are all unknown.
Some of this you can find out by finding measurements done with the same fixtures of known headphones and by finding out what fixture is used (and what target).

But... this thread is about HD620S..

Looking to get a pair of these to replace my HD569s. Just would like to ask any owners how difficult are these to drive at 150ohms. I mainly use lower impedance headphones and am concerned about the higher impedance. Thanks

Depends what your using to drive them. As it happens they have a high sensitivity so don't need much voltage to hurt your eardrums. The high impedance means they won't be drawing much current either, I've used mine straight out of my LG V30 headphone jack.
