Sennheiser HD 620S or Denon D5200?

Hello there,

I'm looking for a pair of closed-back headphones and the two models I'm considering after doing some research are either the HD620S from Sennheiser or the D5200 from Denon. Considering I'll only use them to listen to electronic music (ambient, IDM like Boards of Canada or Autechre, dub techno), I wonder which one of those two would be the most fitting.

Where I live, the D5200 costs more than twice as much as the 620S (522€ versus 250€). So do you think the D5200 would actually be worth spending that extra money? Does any of those two HP handle electronic music better? What would the D5200 provide that the 620S couldn't?

To give you some context, I'm looking for closed-back headphones to complement a pair of bookshelf speakers (BR04 from Triangle) for more "isolated" listening sessions. I intend to use them mostly at home, so mobility isn't a concern. Sources used would be a Macbook Pro, an iPhone 13 or also the headphones output of a Wiim Ultra. I already own a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro but I only use it for music production.

Thanks for reading, and I'll gladly take any advice you might have!

Let me throw in the Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X. A bit cheaper than the Sennheiser, but probably more comfortable to wear over long time (velour pads). I bought it as a replacement for my AKG K371 (headband broken).

Is "Sennheiser" still investing into their headphones? The real Sennheiser is focused on Pro Audio these days. The consumer division (which includes all the headphones we discuss here) is up for sale again.

I thought those were more monitoring oriented and so less musical sounding? Aren't they too flat?

Musical sounding means nothing. An accurate frequency response lets you hear the music as intended by the musicians. If you want to change the sound to taste use tone controls.

I've owned all these headphones. Still have the 620 and the DT770 Pro. The Denon D5200 was a nice sounding set for me, but my ears constantly touched the drivers (pads too shallow) and the headband gave me hotspots (as did the D7200 and D9200). So, from a conform perspective the DT770 and 620 are notably better for me. Also, the 620 has the best passive noise isolation of the group if that is important to you. As for sound, my own personal preference is to the 620 but I will say the D5200 seemed to have more substantial bass.

Not all headphones. The 480 and 490 Pro are made by the "real" sennheiser as you call it. This does not mean the 620S are bad though.

https://www.sennheiser-hearing.com -> The part of Sennheiser which belongs to Sonova (HD 620s and most other headphones)
https://www.sennheiser.com -> The "classic" Sennheiser (HD480 Pro / HD 490 Pro)
