Krebs on Security is a good mid-technical level source of cybersecurity news.
A smart TV is of course connected to the Internet by your home WiFi or wired Ethernet, so it is a TCP/IP network node and computer. Apps and app stores are all the rage, and app stores are always being sued and regulated to host all kinds of apps.
Researchers found that many smart TV apps act as an Internet proxy. In other words, someone somewhere on the Internet can route their Internet through your TV. It is a common tactic for botnets and hackers. I can't think of any legitimate reason to do it. Of course Amazon does it with their Ring network. Google had a project a few years ago to share your WiFi (with permission) to any passerby on the street or a neighbor in a grand free Internet philosophy. I think it was discontinued on 2020.
