I see 16 woofers on wall, at some point, what does it change if only 4 were on wall Vs 16 for example at an average listening level of lets say 80db
I understand SPL would be much higher, but useless in a room
I would be really curious to listen that set up/room
Main reasons are super effortless sound, clarity, precise transients and musical feeling. And the way they fit in the system, with almost no feeling of being separate subwoofers.
Of course you can make 120dB, but it is not the point here.
I have had 4, 8 and 16 drivers. I have had open baffle, reflex cabinets and closed. I have had so many different placement setups with this room in 10 years. Corners, floor, up, behind and sides and so on.
4 is good, but you can hear standing waves across the room (walking around hundreds of times) and you can hear them a bit as subwoofers, not fully part of the music. So i think with 4 I had the problem to melt them inside the sound, they were a bit separate from it. 8 went better, but 16 really blows your mind.
It creates the wall of bass. But you should not compare to that in basic movie theaters, they make just high SPL,low rumbles rarely good musical sound.
Having wall of bass you actually hear much less standing wave positions, and they exist mainly in the middle of the my room, and everywhere else the sound is just there. I am not acoustic engineer, so i can't explain the mechanism of that. In the listening point there is quite optimal bass, easy to fiddle with DSP and no need to think too much abt standing waves. Of course room adds it own charasteristics too.
I think it has something to do with the relativity to the room size, when it reaches certain point of surface area.
It creates same kind of immersive feeling being inside in the music like good stereo image does for spatial awareness.
The drivers barely move at 80dB. They have ideal volume in the close cabinet and movement is minimal, so distorsion or other mass moving problems goes minimal. Drivers work in the ideal conditions then. I have never liked the idea of drivers moving like crazy, there is too much inertia to move and problems starts with that.
They hardly vibrate anything with mass in the room, but at the same time you feel the air vibrating listening high volumes. SPL depends fully how you turn your volume up. If there is recording with no bass, they don't add anything in it, they stand silent. One amazing thing is, that the sound stays the same at low and at high volumes. And there are no limits what kind of music i can listen to, it might be Bass Mekanik, hardcore techno or lightest jazz. Anything goes whith these. And you really can hear the full range of bass, even when you listen so low volumest that you barely can hear it.
