Searching a preamp for my Nilai monos

Hello, I recently got the Hypex Nilai monoblocks. I'm currently playing them with an Eversolo A8. I'm not happy with the sound of the Eversolo's preamp. The Eversolo's preamp isn't very high quality, and I have to turn the volume up to -25 to reach room volume. The monoblocks are set to medium gain, and with this setting I get a volume of around 75 dB in a 25 sq m room. Mind you, the Eversolo is already set to -25. It goes down to -0. I think the problem is that the Eversolo's preamp is a passive preamp. I've also found out that the Eversolo apparently sends DC voltage to the power amplifiers via XLR when it's powering up. This causes an unpleasant power-up noise from the speakers. Now to my question. I only want to use the Eversolo as a DAC and as a streamer. I'd like to buy a separate preamp. I'm thinking of the Hypex Nilai Preamp. Does anyone have experience with the Nilai power amplifiers? What is the gain of the Hypex preamp? I would appreciate any answers. Thanks.

The Eversolo is an excellent preamp, easily audibly transparent, it is not passive it has 10dB of gain.
Turn on the A8 first then turn on the power amp, and the reverse when you turn the equipment off.

No, no, and no again. The Eversolo is not a good preamp. Why do you always claim the opposite? And why should I turn on the Eversolo first and then the power amps? Then why does the Eversolo have a 12-volt trigger? Answer that question, Keith.
Thanks

Just look at the measurements below it is audibly transparent that means it is as good as it gets.
Learn to understand what measurements mean. I use the A8 here with my Boxem amps ( and the Eversolo one hopefully once it is repaired) and no noise whatsoever,

Measurements matter as long as the gear is working properly.
Putting out DC means is NOT working properly, that's totally unacceptable.

Faulty unit maybe?

Is it outputting DC though, the poster ‘thinks’ it’s a passive pre and is concerned over the position of the volume knob…
If it is faulty then it should be returned.
My recent experience suggested that this generation of customers have very little technical knowledge and often receive no reply from the retailer when there is an issue.

And why should I turn on the Eversolo first and then the power amps?
Because you should always do that. When powering up, start with the sources, then preamplifier/EQ and finally power amplifier. Never turn them on at the same time.

Power off in the reverse order, power amplifier then preamplifier then sources.

This has been common knowledge and guidance for decades. It can't guarantee safety but it's likely to extend the life of your speakers and even power amplifier if there is a fault in a source device or preamplifier (e.g. if a DAC has jumped to 0dBFS).

Thanks for the recommendation. But why does the Eversolo have a 12-volt trigger? Could you please answer that question?

Because customers require it. That doesn't make it a good idea.

@Stereoed mayI ask which input you are using with the A8’s preamp?
Keith

At -25, you still have 25 dB to go; that is quite a lot (more than 300x the average power). Incidentally, the medium gain settings should be enough to run the amp until full power with the Eversolo.

As for the trigger, if correctly designed, it can do exactly what is best practice: fire up the pre, and once stable, enable the power amp. And do the reverse when powering down. Do you use the 12V trigger?

So not actually using the ‘preamp’ of the A8 at all.
Keith

The A8’s ‘preamp’ is accessed only through the analogue inputs.
You are simply attenuating the digital signal.
Keith

Semantics the point is the ‘preamp’ is analogue input only.
Keith

So, the 10dB gain refers only to analog inputs?
Yup, it seems like it. It also seems to be non-defeatable, which is a bit strange if you claim that on XLR, both input and output voltages are max 4.2VRMS. That means that from -10 volume on, the thing should be clipping if the input is 4.2V
