Recently (very) got a bluesound edge with a pair of ELAC debut 3 B5.3. The speakers are on a 35sqm living room on the 2 sides of a TV.

I got into the game so now I measured under the TV and I have 32cm of height to put a small sub in. That is inside a shelf so the sub must be sealed and front firing (right?).

Interested only for better music so ultra depth for movies not a target or wanted.

Any nice recommendations not exceeding say 600? I saw the kantosub 8, the KRK the kef cube 8, dynavoice and a couple of others..

Thanks in advance,

I don't have a recommendation...

Right... you don't want to "restrict" the port.

Ideally, you should have a crossover to re-route the bass to the sub and filter it out from the main speakers. The bass management built into AVRs is the easiest way get a (active) crossover.

Do you know how you are going to connect it? It can get tricky... Do your electronics have a subwoofer output? Or at-least volume-controlled line-level outputs? If you don't have the "proper connections", look for a sub with "speaker-level" inputs.

FYI - With movies, a separate subwoofer is required for the "point one" LFE channel. But that means you also need an AVR or other surround decoder. Otherwise the LFE channel is not included in the down-mix and you only get the regular bass.

No need to be front firing, bottom is a fine option. It's omnidirecrional anyway.

@DVDdoug No problem, the Bluesound streamer/amp has sub out and nice XO.

which country are you in? looking here https://bit.ly/SubwooferComparison and filtering for height and price there is not many measured subs that fit

perhaps on of these

I am in Greece.

You are right about those subs...also kantosub 8, KRK, kef cube 8, and dynavoice.

So between those which one should be my choice for music playback. That would be my question.

Thank you in advance.

Wharfedale WH-D8 & WH-D10. Please try to go with 10" one I have two of them. They aren't anything special but serve the purpose.

If you put a subwoofer in the shelf, you have the risk that the whole shelf will rattle with the sub. Either get a sub that has high weight, or a dual-opposed design will help. Dual-opposed is best, since the enclosure will be inert.

KEF KC62 is very expensive but would fit.

DIY would be a good option as well, as there not that many dual opposed designs on the market.

The KEF Kube 8 is a good and good looking sub for its size, and it will fit. However, on such a shelve a dual opposed sub may be better to avoid resonances, although rather more expensive.

Both will fit:

However, I think you might have issues placing any subwoofer on a shelf. Chances are that the shelving unit might have a tendency to "join in".

You can get decoupling feet and platforms that might help, but I think even these might struggle to tame things completely, unless the shelving unit is very sturdy and dead/dense:

I'd agree - huge risk of resonance throughout the whole cabinet.

Paradigm Essentials Sub 10, remove the feet and use smaller rubber pads to gain the 1cm too tall, the feet are about 4cm. I am testing for our company right now. I was playing and did some in room comparisons at 1/3 octave intervals. Weather is not permitting for ground plane outside, so use this as a relative measurement as values will be high. I compared the measurements to a Kali audio WS-6.2 which is too big for your situation but I consider one of the better small subs for its price. I've used the Kef Kube 8 and its performance would be as good as the Paradigm. But it would also be a good choice for your size. Although the Kube 8 does have a lot nicer finish if it was being shown, definitely a good lookng sub. Another consideration might be the SVS SB-1000 Pro without its feet. That is a 12" woofer so should perform well. You would have to call them and get its dimensions without feet.

Here are some graphs.

Take a look at the M&K VX-7, MX-70 and MX-700 subs. All available used on eBay

I am reading now for passive radiators. It is still not clear to me if i can go for that. Does a passive radisator work well in a bookshelf situation? Do I just need to consider ta radiator freedom of movement or do it needs space like an open bass port?
