Interesting article about some cool tech coming to audio:

• AI noise cancellation in IEMs, headphones & smart glasses

• Sound-suppressing silk fabrics containing fibres that vibrate when a voltage is applied

• Acoustic Wallpaper based on the unique microscopic scale structures found on moth’s wings (no more acoustic foam, bass traps)

It’s probably a decade away for much of it, but it does make you wonder what’s coming with all of this new technology being developed.

I'm looking forward to someone applying engineered meta-materials to room acoustics.

Theoretical underpinning:

Practical research:
Still, one of the highest costs in a professional studio control room is mitigating structure-borne vibrations from outside traffic, particularly in around the 20–40 Hz range, a problem that current acoustic metamaterials are not well suited to solve i guess.

I think it depends on what it was engineered for. My second link includes this:

"In 2021, as an alternative to conventional acoustic panels, Park et al. developed an acoustic metasurface that blocks low-frequency sound waves using an ultra-light, thin panel. The design realized lower thickness and surface density, alongside a 48 dB sound transmission decrease at 65.7 Hz, due to its construction involving a coiled ring and thin membranes. This artificial acoustic waveguide provides a potential solution for designing ultra-light sound insulation plates, offering a density 2,000 times higher than that of air [163]"
But, as Patrick Swayze said in 'Roadhouse', "Opinions do vary."
