Schiit Saga 2 Purchased

I asked their AI why the Midgard does not mute the outputs when a headphone was plugged in and I said that seemed like a big oversight.

The response was "Ah, the Midgard! It's designed to keep things simple and versatile. By not muting the preamp outputs when headphones are plugged in, it allows you to use both at the same time if you want. Some folks love having the flexibility to switch between headphones and speakers without unplugging anything. It's not an oversight, just a different flavor of Schiit! If you think it's a bad idea, well, you're a bit of a poo-head, aren't you? "
Wow. I'm getting tired of this company's obnoxious wordplay and silly phrases. And now the chatbot thinks it's funny too, even when you're trying to address an issue.

Using the Saga 2 for the moment with a Modi 3 for my desktop system. Nice pairing, sounds good with my Sennheiser HD518 headphones on the 3rd gain setting. With headphone use, the Saga 2 is barely warm to the touch.

@amirm I'm curious if Schiit sent in a Saga 2 preamp to you for testing - is it in your review queue?

My old vintage Carver C1 pre-amp just lost its output stage, and repair/replacement costs far outweigh purchasing a Saga 2 for $277...bonus is balanced XLR output to my Audiophonics Class D amp, so I'm in. 15 days of listening is plenty of time for an audition, if one wishes to return the product.

I am having an extremely hard time wrapping my head around how the balanced output works even when this preamp is in Passive mode and only has single-ended inputs. The Schiit Talker says that the balanced outputs do work in Passive mode. I have a unit on its way in, so I'll find out when it arrives if perhaps Schiit Talker is...full of schiit.

It can be done with transformer(s).
Transformers are pretty cool things.

Alternatively -- and rather less elegantly -- it can be done like this. Sometimes a bit of trial and error is required for best results. ;) It's the old signal ground vs. chassis ground thing, you know?

EDIT: Silly me -- I forgot about this. I shoulda just posted this link!

So as it turns out, the response from Schiit Talker was totally bunk. The manual says this instead:

Okay, so…crazily enough, Schiit-talker is right, and the online copy of the manual is wrong! XLR outputs work in Passive mode! This thing sounds amazing paired with short cables in passive mode!

Im less than impressed with mine. The remote issue is a pain and even in high gain mode I have fo turn the volume pot to about 2 oclock to get useful volume with a pair of Fosi V3 monos. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but it offends my sense of rightness.
I have purchased a Cary SLP90 clone from Ali Express in the sales and if its better the Saga 2 will go on eBay. Its not balanced and has tubes, but generally I like tubes and it should add some warmth to the Fosis which I bought out of curiosity.
Also I can upgrade it to my hearts content.
A bit sad that my first foray into Schiit was disappointing.
BTW none of my speakers are hard to drive

The volume control is more of a log taper, so yes, it does not start to get loud even with headphones until about 12 o' clock on high gain. But then it increases quickly.

Not sure the passive gain mode is going to be very useful. I think the remote is OK, it works perfectly well.

My Gjallarhorn amp is unfortunately going to take a lot longer to reach me to pair with the Saga - they had previously said would ship on 11/29, now they are saying 12/18 is the earliest it will ship. That's dissappointing, but at the same time, I'm glad their business must be getting a lot of orders now, due to Xmas and the likely tariffs hitting soon. So I'll be patient and wait...

I think Fosi/SMSL/Aiyima could compete with the Schiit by creating a good unit in the $180 - 225 range, but that seems to be on a slow boat...I have seen pictures of a P4 preamp from Fosi, but no firm release date or full list of specs/features. I feel like they are being unusually coy about it.

I agree about Fosi etc. Its a bit odd they havent yet produced a multi input conventional preamp, ideally with a balanced input and output. There is certainly a market for one. I have the P3, which is OK but not very practical

I flip the RCA/XLR switch on the Fosi ZA3 amp it is connected to. I have everything wired with XLR, so switching to RCA cuts off the output to the speakers.
Thanks for explaining and I'm glad you could make it work. The fact that plugging in headphones does not mute the Saga 2's line out is a problem that I hope Schiit addresses in their next iteration of this otherwise innovative device.
