I’ve been using the fairly new Schiit Mimir with Forkbeard, bypassing the DAC chips in my Bluesound Vault 2i, for about 6 weeks now and I’m finding a very distinct improvement from my Alan Eaton dual mono 1.5 wpc amps and Klipschorns. There is an added richness and openness that the Bluesound Vault DAC didn’t have. I’m loving it! The Mimir is on the left under the shelf just above the amps.

I would think the noise and distortion of the tubes in the Alan Eatons would overpower any difference between DAC chips. However, definitely go with what is sounding best. I had a Modi + and it was a transparent DAC. I would think the more expensive Mimir would be just as good and it is balanced out to prevent ground loops.

Oh dear.

I assume you've compared accurately level matched (with a volt meter) and double blind - and enough trials to be statistically valid.

Otherwise whatever it is you think you are hearing is not of much use to anyone else.

Of course I matched voltage levels to make it as even as possible from before, and 21 back and forth trials with 4 different songs that I’m extremely familiar with. Half of those tests my wife (who has very sharp hearing) blind tested the different DAC’s and every time picked the Mimir as the superior sound.

The Eaton amps are absolutely dead quiet - and that is with speakers with the sensitivity of 105db. And I do not detect any distortion from a pure sine wave or any music, but that’s probably because I’ve set the amps outputs to 0.75 watts.

Hey stupid, these two speakers don’t sound the same. If you had any actual listening experience across a variety of components you’d already know that. But sure, be an idiot who on the one hand insists that all DACs sound the same while on the other hand lurking around a forum that’s all about DACs.

If all DACs sound the same what’s the point of ASR?

Wake up Hifi Incels. It’s not everyone else. It’s you. ASR is the laughing stock of Hifi. Has been for a couple of years now.
You are calling someone else stupid for believing in science and blind testing. Have you ever heard of the story of the emperor's new clothes ?

Looks like I opened up a can of antagonist personalities here, I’m sorry as it seems all I wanted to do is help if someone is deciding on upgrading their DAC, (again I more than felt the difference was palpable between the Bluesound DAC and the Mimir DAC). I wasn’t saying a $300 DAC is the same as a $20,000 DAC but I’m sure I’m not alone looking for the best bang for the buck. And the person who answered “Oh dear”……………I couldn’t even hazard a guess wtf that meant?
Is your test blind? If not, then (with emphasis on what was said at 56:43) ...

Yes, it was blind, for my wife who correctly described the differences between the two. And yet richness and wider soundstage was definitely new with the Mimir, maybe richness I should have said more defined? I could live with that.

There is some reason to believe the differences, prevailing ASR dogma notwithstanding, could be heard by mere mortals in this case.

I am surprised that in a test data-driven forum like this one that people would be automatically defending a manufacturer that has products ranked in the "poor" category by our host:

Yet they haven’t tested the Mimir………I see this is going to be ongoing I believe.

They have tested the recent Modi which was completely transparent. I've sure the Mimir would measure the same as Schiit has been very consistent in recent years. The Mimir also has added benefit of balanced outputs. It seems like a really nice DAC. If Schiit supported DSD I would be using one as my main DAC.

Schiit has a reputation for competently designed DACs and they also publish AP test reports themselves which have been corroborated by ASR and others.

There's no reason to believe your Mimir performs substantially different from my Modius E (as a DAC: both ought to be audibly perfect) and it adds some nice features.

I'm interested in your experience with Forkbeard, which I believe is a relatively new feature on Schiit products. What's the interface like to use, what functionality does it have, does it work well?

Thread cleaned after trolling.

Please try to focus on the product(s) rather than the person. Thanks!

I do not get what part of this that some folks don't understand???
