Wow what a thorough, well thought out response, best I've seen on the subject, thanks so much for taking the time.

It will take a bit of time to process, meantime if anyone has links to further authoritative explanations, would be appreciated!

I'm considering a new headphone dac and amp for my desktop pc setup. I'm currently using the iFi zen dac and zen can stack. I mainly care about sound quality over features.

I'm considering either the Midgard and Modius stack or the JDS Labs Element IV (they're roughly the same price in Europe).

Or should I spend more and get the Fiio K17, it has some cool extra features that I might use at some point like streaming, but it also comes at nearly doubt the cost.

Any recommendations?

If you don't care about features, what's wrong with your iFi setup?
I'm curious if I can get more fidelity, clarity, or generally better resolving sound out of one of the dac/amps I listed. Or perhaps a different sound signature that I will prefer.

My only reference is the ifi zen dac and zen can and the headphone out on my audio interface.

If it's relevant, my source is always my pc streaming from Tidal or Spotify and listening through headphones or a pair of Adam Audio studio monitors.

I'd take the JDS personally.

Slick design, great haptics, fantastic customer service, and built-in PEQ for frequency response correction as the cherry on top.
Thanks for the recommendation. Yeah, the dsp and PEQ features look great. I've never messed around with EQ too much, but this might help me get some more variety with my headphones in terms of sound signature. The Fiio k17 also has a 31 PEQ.

You won't, with the only exceptions being the JDS and K17 due to the options that can actually change/improve sound quality.

The K17 being a very expensive option but very universal and great looking.

I would just get the Jotunheim with the built in Mesh DAC module. It's a far more powerful system than the Midgard, only slightly more expensive, and very convenient as a single box system. You can drive pretty much any headphone on the planet with it, including the Tungstens.

In this case, I think the money is better spent buying a better headphone.

I really want this head-amp, but Schiit consistently kills me with their inability to make products that are rated 100v-240v. I don’t want to mess around with step-up converters - either they are pure junk on Amazon, or high quality but cost 3x the price of the unit they are intended for. I can’t win.

The Topping DX5 II is a better value and mine has worked perfectly. Honestly I don’t even use my ADI-2 as an amp/Dac it’s a preamp at this point.

I've been using step up convererters with no issues going on two years. Just get one without a universal plug.

My main issue with brands like Topping, SMSL, etc is the vast amount of complaints I’ve seen from people that their units stopped working (whatever reason) after days, weeks, or months.

I’m not saying Schiit are always perfect and nobody ever got a bad unit. But they also have a warranty longer than 1 year.

The ones on Amazon here in Japan are garbage (if they are inexpensive). I found 3 from Koden that seemed fine but when I inquired about them working with the Mimir and Midgard, the technical division told me no, no, and no - not compatible. Any that seem geared directly for audio (and audiophiles), again, I don’t see the point of spending ¥50,000 for a converter that goes into a ¥100,000 system.

If you know of any, I’m all ears :)

I'm using a Vevor. I know the "Universal plug" is not safe to use and isn't actually grounded for some plugs so I got one with EU plugs.

I'm not an EE so I dunno if they are up to their standards or not but I've had no problems using 2 220V amps in the US with mine

Appreciate it. Their converters all seem to do 110 to 220 and vice versa. Won’t help here at 100v, unfortunately.

At 110, the life of caps & such are only 10% overloaded. The USA standard is & has been for a long time 120 (I usualy measure 119V but somtimes as low as 117V at the recepticle). This does become an issue with gear from Japan.
I spent 1-3 weeks at a time every 3 or 4 months from 2004-2018 in Sasebo, a month one winter/spring transition in Hiro and a day or so, a couple of times in Yokahama.

Maybe see what brands are recommended and try and find one on eBay?
