I used to work with Koreans at a dental tech lab (the place was Korean owned, and had more than 70% Korean workers). Some of the nicest people, and made a few friends there. They would take me out after a long day of work on Fridays to drink sake and a whole bunch of other stuff in K-town (Korea town it's called, a portion of Manhattan). ....
Sake? Sake? Why not SOJU?

In my experience, most of the Koreans in the big cities can speak, at least, some English. Many are fluent in English. The trains and metro all have English translations on signs and stop notifications. The ease of getting around here without knowing any Hangul has kept me from being motivated to learn the language. That's my excuse anyway.

I'll be the first to tell you, many dream of living in the tallest buildings and highest floor possible. Here in New York City, that is better than any mansion or home from a cultural standpoint of the generation in their early to late twenties.

Also, you have an amazing setup, I really like the customization, and was amazed to hear you don't take audio cables that cost $10,000 seriously. Almost everyone I see with the budget you've invested in your setup goes crazy on buying cables because they think it will "give them that last 5%"

But I should have seen you didn't believe in audiophile nonsense like that, the moment I saw the Benchmark kit especially :)

Also great color wrap on the speakers I have to say.

Also the insulation you're talking about in your building for the sake of noise that Samsung does better than other companies isn't common here in NYC. Especially newer buildings, everything is built like garbage, even though they're luxury buildings for the most part.

I used to work with Koreans at a dental tech lab (the place was Korean owned, and had more than 70% Korean workers). Some of the nicest people, and made a few friends there. They would take me out after a long day of work on Fridays to drink sake SOJU! and a whole bunch of other stuff in K-town (Korea town it's called, a portion of Manhattan). I loved the food, the amazingly rich culture, the friendly and light-volume speaking tone everyone has (not like the crazy people yelling every day you sometimes here in NYC). I wish one day to visit South Korea, but I'm too afraid to go alone without knowing how to construct a single sentence.

If I could I'd live there just based on the beautiful photos of the view you have. NYC literally looks like a backwater swamp compared to Seoul. And technologically, we're cavemen by comparison. Oh and I also had a secret crush on a married co-worker there at the lab that would smile every time she'd walk by. I only talked very little with her at a wedding I was invited for with another co-woker since she didn't speak English much at all.

NEVERMIND that though. South Korea looks amazing, and I'd leave NYC instantly if I knew the language for sure..

We all have longing for something that we don't know very well. Like I do. It is very good news for me that you have good feelings about Koreans.

As @DKT88 says, Koreans are quite familiar with English. It's not a native language, but it's actually a native language because we learn English from a very young age. So don't worry. But please do not expect too much. It could be Paris syndrome.

Please feel free to contact me if you come to Korea anytime. I can help you a little.

Are there any good Hi-Fi stores in Seoul? I’ve heard of Yong-San. Was wondering if there are others worth checking out.

Yongsan is famous for its electronic buildings. However, it has recently declined and is not suitable for HI-FI purposes. Rather, there is a HI-FI shop in Gangnam, Apgujeong. It's very well done and there are many brands. Head-FI and HI-FI are all well-established "Schezarde" in Apgujeong Rodeo. And since each brand has an exclusive importer, you may have to visit a particular shop if you have the brand you want.

I miss having a local restaurant with an authentic Mul Naengmyun (물냉면). We had a restaurant right around the corner run by ex-pats but it closed long ago.

JBL M2 is a speaker that does not have a crossover board inside. So M2 needs an external DSP with crossover adjustable EQ and delay, and also need four-channel amplifier.
Awesome M2 system, I'm so totally jealous!!!!

I went to a little Korean Restaurant one afternoon near my apartment in Irving TX.

Upon entering, it appeared to be run by three housewives, who, at 3pm, were just sitting around a table passing time.

I sat down, one brought me a menu.

I looked at it for a while, rather clueless, picked a chicken something.

She came back for my order, I pointed at it, she said "You don't want that!"

I folded the menu, held it out for her to take, and said "Well, bring me what I want, please".

They all got up and set to work on my meal, and, whatever it was, it was good.

Wrong answer, "No, I want that." It will open your horizons.

Maybe.

I tried to eat a cooked fish eyeball once. Think golf ball with a soft outer cover, but otherwise impenetrable.

Had Ox Liver sashimi at a little place that is a parking lot now.

Declined the raw chicken at Tori-Ko, though.

---

They brought about seven kinds of kimchee, some soup, some meat dish, rice, and one of the ladies even came over and sat in my booth and ate with me. The others moved their stuff to the nearby table.

It was a good late lunch.

If there's anything I miss about Asia, it's the proliferation of Mom and Pop style places to visit, though I suspect their numbers are rapidly declining in many areas.

Korean food can be super spicy though. And include such things as tripe which Americans detest. I have eaten tripe but even I couldn't handle the smell in a Korean dish I ordered once.

Most difficult I have had was Whale Sashimi in Hokkaido Japan.

Declined the raw chicken at Tori-Ko, though.
I had it just warmed over. It was super tender like you have never had chicken! Then flew back for 10 hours, near condition of food poisoning. One of the worst times I have had.

The buffet in the Hong Kong first class lounge did that to me once. It is hilarious watching the Americans passing through 12hr. out of sync eyeing the Chivas and Bombay Sapphire as breakfast.

BTW I love the tripe with black beans, pig stomach, chicken feet with fish bladder, etc at dim sum.
