Salk WoW1 Bookshelf Speaker Review

So the last post on this thread is now 4 years old and Salk is no longer in business. It appears that Jim never came back with a full report on his analysis of why Amir's measurements of these speakers didn't match what he published?

I feel as if in today's speaker making world, you must have an anechoic chamber or a NFS to design your speakers. Quasi anechoic, ground plane and other methods appears too cumbersome, time consuming and inaccurate to withstand the amount of scrutiny that's going on today. Very good for consumers, but a whole new landscape for speaker companies.

not true at all ...Dennis Murphy has been designing great speakers for years without klippel .... a side note is that he currently uses klippel measurements to verify his work...infinity and kef have been (were) producing great speakers before measurements were being used widely...
on a further side note : Dennis has been under the weather , i'd like to wish him a speedy recovery.... :)

Andrew Jones also designed the sourcepoint without access to anechoic if I remember correctly. Not sure if he sends it in for a validation scan on the NFS. I believe it costs $2k per scan.

Dennis has sent his work recently to Erin, that's one reason Erin generally won't review Phil audio speakers...

Concur, on Directiva project we mainly used my quasi-anechoic measurements and Mechano23 and other projects have shown the process is close enough Klippel to yield excellent results. It does take patience and discipline to emulate a Klippel robot, but it can be done. It helped that I had someone experienced on the team to judge the data validity. It was a struggle at first, but know more of what to look for now. If one has an engineering mindset and is motivated, it is a good start. Will not discount that experience is a major factor in honing a design as well, but tools like REW and VituixCAD allow a hobbyist to achieve more than designers did decades ago.

Thanks for the update on @Dennis Murphy. Had recently noticed we had not heard from him lately and he was not posting elsewhere either. Philharmonic Audio is a great audio asset and not many like it much anymore, but one’s health has to come first. Hope Dennis recovers soon!

Yes, afaik Dennis was emulating klippel type measurements for several years, but he relies mostly on his ears and experience.... He can take a good speaker and really improve it, he did that with my emotive b1's, I even had an extra pair of stock b1's to a/b them with.. The improvement was very immediately noticeable... I am in complete concurrence with your thought that he and Philharmonic audio are an asset we need to cherish...
 
I had the Salk silks. They were horribly bright, my music didnt sound right at all. Only pair of speakers I was antsy to rid of.
