running dual speakers per channel in stereo, WTF!?

haha we can talk about bikes on another forum! But yeah, that is my other hobby (aside from PC/gaming, SimRacing, & HiFi)
I live in the Santa Monica Mountains. I ride a lot.

listened to several test tracks for over an hour, closely comparing single vs. dual speakers. Swear I cannot hear a difference in fidelity, both sounded just as good to my ears

Did you perform dedicated tests of localization stability, phantom source localization embedded in a natural reverb, or alike? Usually, that is a litmus test to any system potentially generating more than one point, where sound is originating from.

Using front heights with L/R speakers is closer to quad, tho, but not quite.

The original idea of quad was channel-discrete, 4-channel stereophony with the 4 channels placed symmetrically on the same level in the room, i.e. +-45deg from the frontal axis or 90deg between each other.

I was just doing a simple A/B test for about an hour... I didn't hear anything that sounded like a reverb effect or something that would hint that that, both sounded the same to me. I didn't get a chance to do extensive testing as I was also doubting my ears, and instead diverted to just using the secondary pair as Height Speakers. I'm actually enjoying listening to music in Surround mode, just upgraded my receiver from the old Marantz SR5006 to a Yamaha Aventage RX-A2070, what a beast of an AVR... fully featured 9.2 surround with Atmos/DTS-X support (found a great deal on a used unit).

Yet another change in the setup... got a better/newer AVR (Dolby Atmos 9.2). Had to re-measure everything & re-calibrate the subs, this hobby is so time-consuming, but of course rewarding!

Room Response graphs (despite numerous attempts to reposition the subs, I'm still getting a dip in the 80-100Hz region):
* PINK = ESL main speakers + Energy S10 sub
* YELLOW = 3 LFE subs
