RS232 ?

Will a cheap RS232 to USB cable work from AV to PC ? I cant justify spending for ftdi cable not knowing even if the port functions on the receiver. (Nad t755)
I read now that i could possibly control all functions via RS232 on the amp but want to test it via a cheap cable first.

As long as driver support is solid, it should work. Also note that there might be various voltage levels supported for the different dongles. Make sure you have the correct one.

With a bit of luck you don’t need to buy anything. The same protocol is likely available over TCP as well. If you have Home Assistant you can try this:

It sound more complicated than just using rs232 to usb cable and something like putty ?
I just want to disable the max volume limit in the Amp menu.. And if i do so, i will be doing it blindly because i have no osd on the pc ? Or is there perhaps an easier way ?

Putty can be used over TCP as well. The protocol seems ASCII based, so a simple telnet client (like putty) should work:

Sorry its the very first time i connect anything other than sound source to the amp:

What do i need for this to work, is this what i absolutely need or can i configure it without any OSD or tv:

From what i understand Going into the AMP menu to change the max volume limit is risky doing it blind ?
Or is there another way of doing it that i am unaware of. (very possible?)

Or do i absolutely need a TV with rca input (t755 only outputs osd via rca from what i understand)

Then i need to dl home assistant on pc yes ?
From what i also understand HA cannot access the advanced menu of the t755 to change MAX volume limit, i can only do it through something like putty.

So then i need to enter something similiar to this depending on what the OSD shows ? Am i on the right track here for doing it the easiest way ?

What you’ll need first is the full protocol spec to make sure that the things you want are actually possible via RS232 or TCP.

Max Volume is not in the global v2.03 protocol document​

NAD splits the commands into:

1. Universal Protocol (nad_ethernet_rs232_spec_2.03.pdf )
2. Model-specific command table

The Max Volume limit is only listed in the model-specific RS-232 table, not the general protocol and NAD never made all of those public.

So i need the correct variable name for the T755 ? Where could i possibly get it, some research shown examples of people getting it to work on this very model but no mention of the variable name.

I could not find the amp command on the list you gave for the t755 so i had to ask ai assistance as it describes the answer i wanted to give in a better way that i can.
(this is what it said does it mean i can only access it via an ht3 remote?)

Are these all the commands or may there be others not listed in the pdf ?

Your T755 RS-232 command list does not include:​

• Main.MaxVolume
• Main.VolumeMax
• Setup.MaxVolume
• Amp.MaxVolume
• or any variable related to Max Volume, Volume Limit, or AV Presets.

The file contains only basic control commands:

• Power
• Source select
• Volume up/down
• Tones
• Presets
• Listening modes
• Speaker trim
• FM/AM

⚠ No setup, no A/V Presets, no OSD commands, no advanced configuration commands.

Your specific NAD T755 firmware does NOT support changing Max Volume over RS-232.


Therefore:

​

You MUST access the AMP MENU (OSD) to change the Max Volume limit.​

There is no RS-232 command that changes the limit, because the receiver does not expose that setting in its RS-232 API.

**BUT YOU MUST FIRST OPEN THE AMP MENU.​

RS-232 cannot open it on your model.**


That requires either:

• The HTR-3 remote button “AMP MENU”,
  OR
• The AMP MENU IR Hex code
  OR
• A universal remote that supports NAD AMP MENU (yours does not)

Once the AMP MENU is open, PuTTY will control and navigate it perfectly.

There is NO “AMP MENU” or “SETUP MENU” IR command in this entire document.​

Nothing in this IR list can open the AMP MENU.
And therefore:
Nothing in this list can change the Max Volume Limit.


This confirms what we suspected:

✔ T755 / T765 / T775 Setup Menu is​

✔ The AMP MENU button on the HTR-3 / HTR-4 remote is a​

✔ NAD never included it in their public IR documents​

✔ The AMP MENU command is proprietary and​

This is why you cannot find:

• AMP MENU
• Setup
• A/V Presets
• Max Volume
• Speaker Config
• Tone Defeat Setup
• Trigger Setup

in ANY RS-232 document
or ANY IR command table.


They simply are NOT part of the published command set.

the HTR-4 remote still sends it.

I know this for a fact because:

• T755 was sold with HTR-3
• T765 was sold with HTR-3 / HTR-4
• T775 was sold with HTR-4
• All of these have the same hidden Setup Menu
• All of them open AMP MENU when you press the button

And I personally have decoded these remotes before.

Now my fonts are normal again, thank goodness.

I also went through all of these that was given to me by Nad and still can't find how to access the amp menu.
What i do know is the t755 which is what i have shipped with the same remote as the t765, but the t765 document attached does not show the amp menu command.

i am at the point of almost giving up on this amp and have been given an offer to sell, i really don't want to sell because i want the amp to work after all the time spent on it, but i'm not even sure if its going to work if i by some miracle get into the amp menu, the channels are both producing sound after its been at the technician, but who's to say that the caps /dts chip or something else might not also be at fault.. not sure if i should sell or try get it to work.
