99 years old! This is nearly the last living link to Charlie Parker. My wife and I saw him when he was in his mid-80s and he was still killing it. One of my two or three favorite jazz drummers. Fun sidenote: the bassist in this video, Richard Davis, also one of my all-time favorites, taught a college course I took many years ago.

I posted about 2 of his more recent albums in the Jazz Music thread. RIP.

How about another nice album from 1998, 25 years or a half-century ago.

Allmusic: “The inventive drummer Roy Haynes sets a few fires on this exciting disc, Praise. With full brass complement by David Sanchez on tenor, Kenny Garrett on alto and soprano, and Graham Hayes on flugelhorn and cornet, Roy Haynes lays a textured and complex rhythm… The various band configurations, from drum solo to trio to septet, make for a varied and colorful album.” Dwayne Burno plays bass and Dave Kikoski piano.

This was his ~25th of >35 albums as a leader since 1954. His 2004 album Fountain Of Youth was recommended upthread, with a video. See the 2 posts above for abuncha more really nice horn-jazz albums from 1998.

The original post below also has a nice video of Roy on The David Letterman Show, date unspecified.

Another nice one from 2004. From Allmusic: "Drummer Roy Haynes chose a perfect title for this album: at 79 years of age, he plays with energy and unflagging invention. Fountain of Youth was recorded live, ... and Haynes leads a quartet that also features pianist Martin Bejerano, saxophonist Marcus Strickland, and bassist John Sullivan.

Everyone plays with both fire and elegance. Haynes always plays with consummate taste and never consciously upstages his young bandmates, and listeners will be constantly surprised by his inventive and exquisitely tasteful rhythmic exclamations and subtle prods. Very highly recommended."

The video is from 2011 late night TV. This album was a 2005 Grammy nominee. Please enjoy.
