This is a quick note for those less experienced with using room EQ, or that think that it is too hard/complex, or just not worth the time. I was kind of in that group for years. But after a few hours with the most user friendly versions that are easily and cheaply available now - no need for external mic, or expensive dedicated equipment to get a really decent result - I have been completely sold.
Most (maybe all?) of the WiiM products have versions of its RoomFit software bundled in with their streamers. Eversolo DMP A6 has their own version which works a bit differently but same idea.
After years of reading commentary about these tools, and having a fair understanding but not wanting to go the full UMIK / REW software etc route, I finally spent just a morning with my iPhone and using common sense prompts in Google AI to guide me and check / fine tune some of the results as I got them. After a few missteps along the way I rapidly got much, much improved sound results in a couple of different systems in my house. And I do mean night and day differences in a few instances.
It was all so good that I then got an inexpensive iMM-6C mic which delivered more accurate results (particularly in a small room for me) and found myself spending a bit more time with the assistance of AI prompts to develop a couple of more fine tuned PEQ settings for a couple of different music styles.
You have to take just a little effort to learn the basics. Only applying cuts (which WiiM calls a Non-Boost mode), if you do custom PEQ in WiiM outside of the RoomFit function and you end up applying a modest peak of say 2db then using a volume limiter or global db reduction to create headroom - and I strictly did PEQ under 300Hz, just cleaning up the bass. That is all. I found using straightforward prompts in Google with my modest knowledge of the subject and knowing the gear I was using to be really helpful.
Once caution. AI can get its answers/guidance wrong sometimes, but will still tell you something with great confidence. So go slow and test or question guidance that does not look or sound right.
To give readers an idea of the two fairly modest systems I cleaned up I will list the gear and the spaces. Terrific results in both. Sounds clearer, cleaner and just better.
In a small room (study). Lots of clutter. about 4.5m x3m.
Super Dentons with SVS SB1000, Rotel RC 1572 mkii preamp and RB 1552 mkii power amp, Rotel RCD 1572mkii cd player, Wiim Ultra.
Lots of isolated boom in the small room from sub and Dentons cleaned up really well.
Medium sized room, unusual shape and some large double doorways open to other spaces.
Super Lintons, Gustard P26 pre, Rotel RB 1882 mkii power amp, Wiim Ultra and DMP A6 both into Topping E70V DAC. Also older Yamaha CD S300 as transport and a Rega Planar 1 and iFi Zen phono stage. The cd player and Zen both into the Wiim Ultra so it can apply PEQ.
Supers are 27cm out from the wall but still boomy standing waves in this room. All cleaned up with PEQ. Initially sounds so different I felt the bass was lacking. 10 minutes later I realised it was not, it was just that the room was not filled with muddy reverb anymore.
I have also found the HouseCurve app really easy to use after I worked out RoomFit on WiiM and came to understand all this a bit better. I found HouseCurve better to use putting results manually into the DMP A6.
Strongly recommend trying this out. Cost effective and will make the biggest difference without constantly chasing more expensive kit as your solution.
