i have been looking at the wrong thing.
i was looking in "audio inputs and outputs" at the top of the list.
have now disabled both items in that line, just in case, but i have no idea what this does. (both driver tabs showed microsoft drivers)

now looking at the section you have opened "sound, video and game controllers", i have just 2 items there.
i have disabled the item "high definition audio device" (assuming this is a built in sound system on my motherboard?)
which leaves just "RME ADI2 DAC" , which does indeed show the RME driver .

i would like to show screen shots to explain what i am seeing better, but alas i have no idea how .

can i just say, i really appreciate you guys trying to help me out

Incidentally, I see RME there too:

How is the DAC connected to your PC, with a USB cable?

the dac itself is working just fine.
the problem seems to be the Remote software does not like something about my system

@Oldson The ADI-2 entry in the sound, video and game controllers section of the device manager showing the driver used being from RME, confirms that the driver is correctly loaded.

I think with that you can tick off the device manager and driver and focus on the issue at hand: the error message indicating a DX12 incompatibility when launching the Remote application.

my gpu is 12 years old but does support the dx12 as per RME requirements.
i am considering a cheap current gpu , to see if that sorts my issue.
would like to upgrade the whole system but funds are a little tight after buying the dac.

Is your GPU driver up to date?

Both Nvidia and AMD provide driver utilities that will check and update your drivers.

currently using the driver in windows 10.

last night i downloaded and installed the latest driver and software suite from AMD but it made no difference, so i uninstalled it again

I have not used windows in a long, long time, so not sure if this will even make sense, but can you install Direct3D also? Those are the two dependencies MC called out.

Which CPU do you have; does it have integrated graphics?

You may not need a discrete GPU.
