RME ADI-2 FS Version 2 DAC and Headphone Amp Review

Interesting post as my friend inserted a Benchmark LA4 in his audio chain as he claimed the RME ADI-2 Dac FS sounded better at fixed higher output.

2 weeks ago I went to his place to listen to the various levels out from the RME via LA4: yes, I (we) could discern a difference. My experience was more focussed on an improvement of the midrange in his system and the LA4 was always in the chain during the various tests and I did not notice a change in dynamics, in his system, with his RME settings.

I’m not going to comment on the noted differences beyond what is reported in the previous paragraph.
That said I’ve added a preamp in my chain (ok) but I am looking to obtain a Schiit Kara (affordable) or Benchmark LA4 ($$$$) to my system and run my RME at higher fixed output.
I currently still use the RME for volume control in a narrow range; RME set at +13 dbu output and attenuate the signal with an analogue preamp.

I’m also thinking of using a fixed quality attenuator in the interim and ascertain any improvements; or not!

It will be interesting to follow this thread and subsequent comments.
Similar solution on my side. Not fully satisfied with my DC Aeon2 Noire performance with RME ADI-2 DAC FS I wondered what I could improve. DC Noire headphones sensitivity of 92 dB/mW and an impedance of 13 ohms are rather low and require and amp that can perform well with low impedance loads. I tested Noire with other amplifiers and subjectively liked their performance better. No - I did not do any blind A/B tests. To make story short - one of my tests was with Ferrum OOR amp. I liked it and I got lucky to buy this model second hand. Now I use RME only as DAC/preamp (DSP) connected with XLR cables to OOR in bypass mode (fixed MID level gain - headphones power amp) to 4 pin pull/push connection to Noire. RME in Ref. Auto mode. Volume level on RME never lower than -35 db. I am very happy now with this configuration using DC, Edition XS, Arya Organic headphones.

Have annotated subject post with a warning message. Thanks for the assistance.

hey! i would like to add a headphone setup into my stereo system and after some research came across the rme dac in combination with some sennheiser 800s. after reading some more about the functionality of this device i was thinking about connecting my two sources (phono and streamer) to the rme, as i would like to have some sort of dsp for my speakers as well. my speakers positioning is really restricted and room treatment is out of the question (that´s why i would like to have a headphone system for critical listening), so i would just like to correct the bass department a little bit. would the rme be a good choice or should i go for a minidsp for my speakers?

Cant speak about speaker correction but the RME ADI 2 DAC FS (this version) doesnt have analog in for the phono unless you have something else doing the A/D conversion in front of it.

The ADI 2 Pro does have analog in but is more expensive (same DSP though) and the even more expensive 2/4 pro has Phono EQ to take a turntable without a phono stage in front of it.

yeah i already saw that i would have to go for the pro version. if my thinking is correct i would be able to send my two eq corrected sources from the rme to my amp/speakers but still be able to send an uncorrected signal to the headphones on the rme (which would then be eq‘d on their own), right?

edit: just saw that getting a used non-pro version plus a minidsp 2x4 seems like the cheaper option then going for the pro

Yes- you can apply separate (or no) DSP to each output

When I first saw the RME ADI-2 DAC I smiled at the bass and trebble knobs.
Why in all the world would you need these knobs when there's an peq implemented? Seemed so outdated...

Now that I had the chance to get a second hand ADI-2 (V2 - AK 4493) I don't even use any sophisticated eq settings with my HD650 .
Just adding a bit of bass and trebble and my HD650 sounds perfectly. I haven't found any eq setting yet, that I liked better. :D

@MC_RME How long will RMI support this device? I understand there might not be a need for new features. But how about bug fix, os compatibility and the Remote app?

Just wanted to share a recent experience. My version 1 died but RME support is just world class (same great service at work and home). Long story short, I now have version 2.

I updated the firmware, loaded some EQ curves for the HD650 using the Remote ADI-2, and did the bit test to verify foobar was OK. I enabled loudness (my favorite RME feature! this alone is a reason to get this dac). I tried to select the best filter for my taste and settled on "Sharp".

I haven't listened to the RME with headphones in a long time, cause it was setup for my main system. Anyway, I hooked up the HD650 and hit play. OH MY... this is what high fidelity is all about. Between the quality of every section and the rich features, you just get the recording as it was intended. I'll limit the subjective talk to that :D.

My only worry is that it makes me wonder about keeping this in the office and getting a 2/4 for the living room. Looks like the 2/4 could do bass management for a subwoofer. And for my geeky side, it would be easy for me to measure the RIR, compute some parametric filters in Matlab and send them to the dac (manually, with Matlab MIDI or dump an adieqpr file for their remote app). With the features, the clear documentation, and the open format (text-based settings file, open MIDI protocols), this is just so versatile, with no tradeoffs on audio quality.

RME happy camper here

May I suggest therapy? Perhaps starting with what the color combination of Green, White, and Yellow reveals about your personality and your addiction to extremely high quality audio gear at affordable (non-audiophile) price values?

And yes, it would be a shame not to add a 2/4 to that beautiful stack. But which color for the LCD display???

Pretty sure the bottom one is the 2/4 and Rja was one of the first recipients.

As an aside, anything other than monochrome or green is an abomination.

Indeed.
And this photo made the front page

Would the RME ADI-2 DAC FS be powerful enough to drive the Dan Clark E3 well?
