Easy mistake to make.

Not really. The Monkees started as a TV show, only insisted on being a real band later. Nice enough on their own but nothing extraordinary. The Beatles toughed it out with endless rehearsals/performances before anyone heard of them, did not become a TV commodity until they had extensive performances on radio in live to tape performances for the BBC. I have no idea of why you're being so very petty. The 1963 BBC performances reissued on CD demonstrate the work of a band that rocked harder than the US bands they modeled themselves after. And the band kept up their pace of constant innovation right up to the time they disbanded.

I guess I’ll also weigh in as 55 year old US male and say the Beatles are as good as it gets. Put them into context and they are even more great. I can still hear my dad playing Abbey Road on a cassette deck in his Saab when I was 8… Years after it was made. Today, I’d rather hear a lot of other stuff, but I can still put on Revolver a year before I was born and think YUP pretty goddamn legendary.
