Perhaps in this sound-bite world with people wanting instant 'solutions' and 'recommendations' with little or no effort on their part, such go or no-go reviews are just the ticket.
I have no problem with brief "reviews" that uncover showstopper flaws.

Let's remember that this is ASR, not VerifyAllSpecs.com. The Nyquist violation demonstrates an obvious failure in the science, even with a cursory test. IMO, Marantz spent more effort on the promotional copy Amir quoted than on verifying the unit's basic operation. If the manufacturer can't bother to perform comprehensive testing, why should Amir feel obligated?

Thing is, for me at least, regardless of the performance of the rest of the unit and its functionality, if it doesnt get that basic D/A conversion right then I really have lost interest.

Its a premium quality and cost unit that is outperformed by cheap DACs.
Exactly this, for sufficiently flexible definitions of "quality."

THD is not bad but it is clearly let down by noise. If that noise was under control it would be more like 104dB SINAD

Does that 2nd harmonic extend invisibly up to around -96, or is something else making the "noise" for the -96 SINAD?

This has prompted me to measure my recent acquisition of a Yamaha RX A3080. I am certainly hoping for better performance than the Marantz.
Oh it would be great if you measure this. I see this unit as sweet spot in AVRs for cinema+music with balanced stereo pre-outs and es9026 dac. I’ve recommended it to few of my friends and it sounds really good to my ears.

OK kere is the Yamaha RX A3080 playing from USB thumb drive. Balanced out. Volume is set to -6dB so Yamaha obviously view 0dB to be 4 Vrms with balanced, which is in line with my expectations.

Its $3000 AU about $2000 US

Hi

No the second is just over - 105 which tallies with the.0.00062 thd number. The rest appears to be the sum of the noise.

As an avr I have no complaints at all. Their prepriatary room EQ seems to do nothing nasty unlike audyssey frequently does, and the sound placement is extremely well defined.

I haven't really assessed it for pure 2 channel listening.

With external stereo poweramp it can give really decent 2ch sound quality for those who doesn’t want dedicated 2ch system. And this is most of my friends

My experience: modern AVR Yamaha sounds very good with films. Usually the soundtrack have low DR.

With music (stereo) is only OK. I am talking about very good recordings and high/very high DR. And much better with Direct mode, without room EQ.

The expensive AVR Yamaha series have a very good preamp. At least years ago: Yamaha RX-V2700.

Modern AVR, japanese or not, have SNR-A at 1 watt < 85 dB. Less, 83 dB.

@amirm, Marantz AV8895 has the mode Pure Direct.

Can you measure with and without PD? With this Marantz and future AV.

As I have been cleaning my incredible noisy electrical grid, I have been noticing more the difference, with music, between having it activated and not. In my second audio system, that is where I can enjoy my music.

I don't believe you have truly clean power unless you're using the proper cables.

Aaahhhh you are just looking at music segments, OK. Try observing the rest of the audio track, you can go from quiet conversations to huge explosions.

Matey, you should know by now this forum needs measurements not anecdote :)
