What’s up, ASR?

This is my 1st post though I’ve read many pages and posts on this site.

I find myself in a quandary, and thought I’d ask here. Apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum, and maybe mods could move it if needed.
The quandary:
I was gifted a
Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1
that has a damaged 4” mid driver.

The recommended replacement is no longer made, so I thought I’d ask what you all would use to replace the mid drivers. *edit - replace BOTH mid drivers with the same type of 4”, 4-ohm driver

Specs are:
4”, 4-ohm, and the frequency “hole” between the sub cut-off and high-freq crossover seems to be 110hz to 2k. I’m guessing that the power handling should be 30-40 watts.

I have searched resellers / ebay / reverb, and although there are a few for sale, this is me checking into replacing the drivers rather than end up with scavenged carcasses laying about.

You would need to measure the working driver and try to find a similar one from a driver manufacturer based on the TS parameters, including creating a new crossover to match the response. Otherwise you will end up with two very different speakers.

Unfortunately if you can't find an exact match the repair will cost more than buying new speakers.

It won't though, the big thing is getting the crossover between the mid and tweeter right. Just putting a new 4" driver in a box without doing the whole process is a lot like putting a new engine in a car without knowing anything except that it fits. Will the transmission blow up? Is the fuel pump compatible? Etc.

I used to have some blue sky sat 5s and the sub. I don't know if they would measure really well by today's standards but I really liked them.

Anyway, if you want the speakers to sound good, your choices are scavenge an original woofer somehow, or try to replace the woofers, and undertake a whole speaker design process. I recommend trying to find an original.

Matching these, more or less, as well as the physical dimensions will help identify drivers that will react in a similar way in a similar box.

And then EQ using your computer. Although without adapting the crossover the end results will likely cause some issues going over to the tweeter.
