I have rather quickly come to dislike the Apple Remote that comes with the dac 8. I’m wondering if someone can recommend a better rc

What don’t you like about it? Hard to recommend a replacement otherwise.

Ive had 2 audio buddies try to work out how to use it on the dac and they have no more luck than me
I want to play something, I chose the input and if it’s highlighted then that just undoes it
I go into the menu and only a few functions show I try to add more but it doesn’t happen. Highlighting doesn’t always happen

Whereas on my preamp remote it has 5 buttons for different functions and a volume dial
No idiotic menu like on the screen

The down button drops the volume but the up button doesn’t raise it back up but changes function
You end up in the wrong place and it’s easy, I suggest to change functions when you are trying to navigate. I can’t get optical to open, I highlight both of them then go out and they aren’t there in menu
The lack of basic symmetry in functions is terrible design
I have taught design and this would be a very low score

I don’t think that changing the remote is going to solve your problem.

Previously offered Apple Remote is no longer in production. We are currently developing a custom-designed replacement. Until this is available, the dac8 Stereo can be paired with any remote that has a minimum of seven buttons.

I too find it utterly ridiculous that so many of the east Asian manufacturers have copied what is a plain dumb design in that Apple 'style' remote.

My First Remote by Fisher Price for kids with tiny hands and tiny fingers.

Our latest TV came with this stupid looking miniature "smart remote" with a solar cell on the back, USB-C charging and a microphone for the equally useless voice assistant in the TV.

In the UK and other markets, the TV comes with two remotes. The "smart" remote and a proper remote (similar to the one next to it). After a week not being able to see the low contrast lettering, the lack of direct buttons and the slippery tiny size, I ordered a spare original 'real' remote.

Sounds like you've got a faulty unit. Changing the remote, which one can do, the DAC8 just have to learn the remote, will not change your problem.

To change source, you press right or left on the remote - depending on what source you have selected previously.
The menu stays where you've left it for about a minute. Does not matter if you engaged the menu using the remote or not.

@restorer-john, all the base features of the unit are available via one button on the remote. Yes there is a menu system, but that is only needed when digging deeper into the functionality of the unit - such as changing the output filter. It's not an AVR, it's a simple unit.

Having had a nad bleusound previously, i be been impressed with using an app instead of a remote. It isgreat for casting. It also explores the drives- eg an external hard drive. I haven’t had any luck getting it to play anything on an external usb yet, and how can I see what Is on it?

Any news regarding a remote for Okto ?

I used a universal remote Sofabaton U2 with downloaded settings from Topping DM7 and it is working. As a advantage I can control macmini and spotify player from the same remote.

I tried a Sofabaton U1 in place of the Apple Unit, and it was an abortion. It would not learn in automatic mode, none off the codes for my stuff were in its database, and using manual mode for learning proved impossible in that the remote failed to pick up and assign functions to the keys, even after repeated attemps.

If you had more success with Sofabaton, good for you. I got the first one, and it wouldn't learn my TV (LG C1), my Smyth A16 Realiser, or the Octo. About the only things it worked on were the Nvidia Shield, and my Topping A70 Pro. Luckily it was purchased through Amazon and had a generous return policy.

Well, my Sofabaton U2 and Okto didnt work with Apple TV setting first as suggested. I was trying diffrent Dacs' settings until I found Topping DM7. Then I taught my Okto with Topping's commands. My JVC projector works fine except Power button. That's my first day with Sofabaton and I bought mine for 10$ used as someone returned it as faulty. I can control music player (spotify) via Macmini setting, Okto's volume, menu, mute, arrows, enter, no power button. It controls my electric cinema screen as well.
