Reliable DAC

I'm using a SMSL PO100 Pro (not a DAC) to get SPDIF Toslink output into a DAC. My PC audio selected the PO100 and I have no problem lowering the volume on my PC. Same should be the case with a TV I think.
In theory, yes, there is no technical difficulty involved in reducing the digital signal from the optical output on the TV just as the operating system on your PC does. In practice, I think it depends on the TV.
 
Thank you for all the replies to my query. I bought the SMSL SU-1 suggested early on. It's doing the job, and seems to me more robustly constructed than the SMSL DAC I had earlier that failed.
