Refreshing movies worth watching

Lately, I've felt like hanging out in nice, cool, cinemas.

Was bummed to have missed seeing "Project Hail Mary" and "Exit 8" on the big screen, but I've read the novel of the former, and have the game of the latter loaded on my Steam Deck.

So instead, I saw "Declaration Day" and "Obsession" on two different occasions, both early evening, because that's when summer heat peaks in my apartment.

Declaration Day: mature audience, and very quiet. If not for the opening animation for Stephen Spielberg's production company, Amblin, I might have wondered whether I was seeing the correct movie. No spoilers: I was entertained, though not quite how I expected I would be.

Obsession: Media noted that the audience for this has skewed much younger, and indeed, I felt like the oldest person there. I won't be giving anything away not already covered by spoilers by saying that the theme involves youthful awkwardness and longing, a possible solution, but with horrific repercussions.

Along with Obsession and Backrooms, this is one of the best horror movies of the year, if not the best.

Widow’s Bay is also awesome! It’s a horror-comedy TV show or a really, really long movie.

In 1966, French film director Francois Truffaut published interviews with Alfred Hitchcock from 1962, discussing Mr. Hitchcock's movies, in a book called Hitchcock/Truffaut that influenced young filmmakers.

Every frame of most of Mr. Hitchcock's films has intention behind it.

The recordings that were transcribed for the book have been incorporated into a retrospective of Hitchcock films, with commentary added circa 2015 by other filmmakers.

Rented on physical media and available to stream.

Not exactly "refreshing" but a rather disturbing film and (as is the case with other Uwe Boll movies) the execution isn't entirely professional. But compared to the way such topics are portrayed in the daily media it certainly gives you food for thought. Free on X until tomorrow.

Finally got to check out "Sinners" the other night. Thought I might like the music, and I was not disappointed, save that I wish there were more of it! As horror movies go, I found it more entertaining that scary, in ways I did not expect at all. Crank up the volume if you can get away with it!

"Lars and the real girl" (2007)

Not for everyone by far and rather quirky. Impressed by the team who actually managed to make a (very odd) movie out of it. It all comes together in the end. Ryan Gosling by the way, Craig Gillespie directing.

Watched Project Hail Mary last night with my wife in our theater. While I had heard it was good, I had no idea it was this good! To wit, never thought I would be nominating it in this thread!!!

Such nice combination of comedy, acting, science fiction and great soundtrack. Wife and I literally cried for a rock creature!!!

Bought it on Kaleidescape for $24 so a bit expensive but relative to how fresh it is, wasn't a bad amount of money.

Is this an example of the higher pricing for movies you mentioned as coming, in an earlier posting in the thread on large TV's ?

Scarecrow Video raised their rental rate recently - partly because the cost of acquiring new releases on physical media has increased.


When I enjoy a movie as much you found in viewing Project Hail Mary, I consider it a very good value.

I wasn't planning on watching that one in a hurry, as the trailer flagged a possible excess of sentimentality and schmalz. I figured I'd grab it when the price drops, but yes then it showed up streaming free via Prime.

Still a bit on the sentimental side, and Gosling plays it somewhat goofy (it's a buddy movie) but really quite well done. The doomsday scenario is well delineated, and Hüller delivers her well-written character very nicely. Also, the temptation for a romantic interest subplot is eschewed, and the vacuum of space is accurately quiet (almost entirely) both showing rare intelligence and self-restraint.

Now as it happens I'm shopping for a tank of argon this week.
