Refreshing movies worth watching

I found this gem on Amazon Prime this past weekend:

Martin

This movie is underrated. Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone in top form. The trailer is garbage.
Sexy Beast is very good. Saw it at the cinema when it was new. Kingsley is really scary. He succeeds in bringing the feeling of being in the presence of someone capable of terrible violence on hair trigger and not knowing what might offend.

Birth was also very good.

Yep, he's a nightmare on two legs.

I actually have better success finding good movies when I search the past for movies I missed back then. There are still good movies today, but they have become rare.

Hence my ongoing struggle with Vimeo to repair the Criterion Channel app on our Roku. I could ask for a refund but I like the movies and they way they rotate and organize them and send emails with suggestions. For example, they currently have a selection with synth soundtracks. Nice idea.

As it's NAIDOC week here atm, I was pleased to chance upon seeing this delightful film once again.
Charming and humorous and beautifully shot in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia.

sound editing mixing is neat , with score by carter burwell , 7.6 rating , scene for scene of the 1969 , ain't nobody can feel john wyane's boots , jeff bridges does good performance
score really drives the short scene shootout dramatically , it presses against my body in THX sound system , horse hoofs are felt against the ground , gun fire exchange and fixed or panned sounds , wow

Coming from a family who has been part of the Danish theatre and movie world, I’ve grown up watching a lot of different flicks with my father. It was a way for us to connect and also for him to teach me about the craft.
These last ten years or so though have been really poor over all imho with only a rare few shimmers of light…mostly because the movie industry has been hijacked by wokeness and diversity. It’s no longer about telling stories but rather about ‘the message’.
I miss the 90s and early 00s tbh.

Anyhoo some faves of mine include:
The Wickerman (original)
Festen
Dog Day Afternoon
Tropic Thunder
Dr. Strangelove
The Holy Mountain
Aguirre
Pan’s Labyrinth
Brazil

For almost 40 years; watched it over and over again from different stages of life, hence sort of different perspectives, I keep coming back to
1. Doctor Zhivago
2. Deer Hunter
3. Tootsie
4. Cinema Paradiso
5. Dead Poet's Society
6. Good Will Hunting
7. Jerry Maguire
8. The Grandmasters

Although I love multi-channel reproduction, gimmicky special effect for easier gratification, as well as technical speaker placement and setup, those are the movies I enjoy very much without so much care about the reproduction, just be in the moment plunge into the depth of the dialogue, soundtrack, facial expression, and cinematography within a complete package.

Great Plot, Great Acting, Laughs Throughout, Touching, Feel Good Ending, No Vulgarity. Refreshing to say the least. Is it a kids movie? No, as far far from it as a movie can get. $5 on Prime

(Can't recall whether I've mentioned this previously)
The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared:

Two small very affecting Japanese films, both well worth finding.
