You might find a remote controlled used Benchmark within your budget. I use both Benchmark and RME and I find the former very much plug and play, while the latter will present you with a steep learning curve. Both are excellent products from serious companies.

I use a dx7s with balanced outputs to a pair of monitors and unbalanced outputs driving a powered subwoofer. It works great as a digital preamp, very flexible.
