Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a compact, budget-friendly setup to power a pair of small 4-ohm full-range desktop/bookshelf speakers.

My Setup & Requirements:
  • Budget: ~$350 USD / €300.
  • Sources: iPhone and Samsung smartphone.
  • Primary Streaming App: Apple Music (aiming for the best possible audio quality within budget).
  • Speakers: Small 4-ohm passive full-range speakers (need clean Class D power that handles 4-ohm loads stably without thermal or distortion issues).
  • Features: Physical remote control is highly preferred.
Thanks in advance for your measurement-based suggestions!

Hi @MunizO! Welcome to ASR.

The original WiiM Amp (not Pro or Ultra) supports AirPlay, has plenty of clean power at 4Ω, comes with a physical remote, and has a brilliant App with 10-band Parametric EQ for room correction and loudspeaker correction.

Here are measurements:

I'm not sure (I avoid most things Apple!), but I don't think you'll get lossless audio using AirPlay or Bluetooth to the Wiim Amp.
This may not be important to you.

Thank you for the warm welcome and your recommendation. I'll definitely take a look at it.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the warning.

Honest advice:
Lossless streaming is not worth chasing in any capacity.

If Lossless is there anyway with no additional hassle, then sure you can just cross that off the list. Otherwise don't bother.

Some very smart people have made sure that you can't tell a difference 98/100 times:

In your case, to get Apple Music Lossless, you'd have to buy something like the Eversolo Play.

Spend the money that you would save with the cheaper WiiM Amp on things that actually matter for sound quality (speakers, room treatment, measurement microphone) and you'll have vastly better fidelity even if the stream is lossy.

If you have the FLACs from ripped CDs, or FLAC downloads, then I think if these files are stored locally on the phone, they may be playable using Airplay 2 on the Wiim losslessly. I'm not sure of this but it's worth checking if you care. Too many "ifs and buts" in the Apple walled-garden for me!

No, AirPlay 2 is never lossless.

But you can play files stored on the phone, a NAS, or on a USB drive plugged into the WiiM Amp losslessly from the WiiM Home App.

This does not use AirPlay (not even on iPhones), but standard UPnP/DLNA network protocols.

Aha, good to know, even if I would never need to use AirPlay - until Apple own and run everything of course :)

I am feeling a bit unsure after reading about the load dependency issues (speaker impedance dependency).

I intend to pair the amplifier with a pair of 4-ohm speakers. My main audio source is Apple Music, which I will be streaming directly from my iPhone.
Because of Apple Music, the newer WiiM Amp Pro or Ultra models are unfortunately not an option for me, since they dropped AirPlay support entirely. So I am locked into the original WiiM Amp if I want a seamless iOS experience.

My questions to the community:
  1. With a nominal 4-ohm speaker setup, how noticeable is this load dependency in real-world listening conditions? Will it significantly alter or color the frequency response, or is it mostly an issue with 8-ohm speakers and rising impedance in the high frequencies?
  2. Can any potential brightness or deviation easily be corrected using the WiiM Home App's parametric EQ, or does the lack of PFFB cause other audible degradation?
I would really appreciate any insights, experiences, or measurements from people running a similar setup.
Thank you!

As an alternative, I am also seriously considering moving away from Apple Music entirely and switching to another streaming service like Spotify. If I do that, AirPlay wouldn't be a requirement anymore, opening up the path for the WiiM Amp Pro (which has PFFB and addresses the load dependency). Given the choice, would you recommend sticking with the original Amp + Apple Music/AirPlay, or is the sound quality improvement of the Pro model with Spotify Connect worth the switch?

The WiiM Amp's load dependency causes deviations that are less than 1dB in amplitude:

This is inaudible.

Yes.

Spotify lossless via connect controlled by any phone/tablet is probably the most convenient/flexible option at this time. Just about every streamer/streaming amp supports it. Wiim amp pro/ultra would work great and provide other features. Bonus, wiim provides volume leveling if you listen to a lot of playlists. Denon/Marantz, for example, don't.

P.S. You could also consider a wiim pro plus paired with a budget amp such as one of the Aiyima or Fosi brands reviewed here. That would be closer to your budget.

Apple Music lossless can be streamed CD quality via AirPlay 1 to select receivers. I have a Raspberry Pi with bare linux and Shareport Sync setup for this purpose. All it does is provide an 'AirPlay 1' destination for my MBP, iPhone, and iPad

I would recommend to get a WiiM amp and get one that has sub out + eq.
There is simply no better upgrade in the near future than this.

In my experience it is cheaper in the long rong (2 years in my case) to save a bit and buy say a WiiM amp ultra, with all the features than buy a cheaper WiiM amp and upgrade later.

Spotify as streaming service or a NAS playing via ethernet cable/wifi is very easy to use in either apple or google products.

Pinknoise Amp vs. Amp Pro. I think I'll stick with the Pro version. I installed Spotify Free. I didn't know that's even more expensive than Apple Music.
