Recommend me a Cd player

When I have knowingly bought something imported from europe into the uk as a grey import, yet there was no mention of the 2 pin euro plug in the ad, I think the supplier should have advertised this fact.

the UK has abandoned checking imports and standards - loads in govt. agencies are now working at home, so productivity must be rocketing

I admit I don't have any details of any regulations but it is fun to speculate until an expert, actually in the job, shows up!....

A recent phone call to the Land Registry (once excellent) gave me some clueless bloke shouting at his unruly kids in the background - so we're fucked.

What's the big deal, you can't plug it in and have it operate, wrong pin config, or wrong voltage?

Plug adapters are common. We have some for Eu and UK plugs when we travel.

Wrong plug, so as I can't remove the cable I have to use an adaptor plug or cut the euro 2 pin of, the voltage is the same. It's no big deal whatsoever. I would have like to have known it was european cd player rather than one made for the Uk. They tend to be cheaper as they are imported.

Optical disc players depend somewhat on what discs you plan to play, whether you need certain connectivity/internal dac, etc. Personally I look to bluray players that can act as universal optical disc players with a variety of ourput options, altho that's getting harder these days. Too bad Oppo opted out....

What’s the consensus on the best CD player tested using the onboard DAC and line level out? Some of the numbers are over my head.

I’ve currently got a Rega Apollo r, but it’s going into a shelf and so I need to get a front loader. Thinking the Denon 900 as I can get it in silver to go with the Rotel amp I am using.

Best in what way? Mostly they'll all sound the same. If you read Amir,s reviews here, in the summary he'll tell you if it unfortunately did something audibly bad in it's design. Beyond that, it's weight will give you a decent idea on on well built the transport, chassis, etc are built, henceforth it's possible long term reliability.

Generally the dacs used are not going to make an audible difference. Whether you need one in a player might depend on the rest of your system, but I use mine largely only as transports.

Overall package I guess. I understand that they all pretty much clear the dynamic range of cd, but there’s plenty of other measures in here like the oversampling error, that go straight over my head, as well as other less specific niceties that don’t affect SQ like time to read etc, as well as looks.

It’s just going in to a little rotel A8 slimline amp with no DAC; my wife bought a new tv unit with limited space so the A-S701 has been replaced with my daughters bedroom amp for now, and the Rega as a top loader no longer fits.

I see the Denon and the Tascam get good reviews, front loaders, so I’ll seek out one of those at a good price

A few days ago, I threw away three Pioneer and Sony CD players and two DVD/BD Pana/Sony players because they didn't work: the laser was worn out and it was difficult to find a replacement after so many years...
I ripped all my CDs with a BD player from my PC and now I'll never use a laser again.
The future for me is a streamer or HDD.

Wow, you must have spent a lot of time playing discs to toast that many lasers ?
The thing about streaming is you never know from one day to the next if the album you want to play, in the mastering you want to hear, will be available.
I've been fully committed to PC storage for many years, as mentioned just keep good backups.
Thankfully I've never had to fall back to one in nearly 20 years.

Thought I would update this thread, in the end I purchased a Tascam CD200, which as some of you know who read this, came with a Euro 2-pin fitted and not a 3-pin UK plug, I wasn't happy with the Euro to UK adapter they sent, today they have refunded me with £40, making the total price for the Tascam £210. I am more that happy with this and in the end I saved close to £800 by not buying an Audiolab 9000CDT to cosmetically match my other Audiolab stereo gear

I haven't had any problems with CDs so far; even discs that are over 40 years old are still playing perfectly without issues.
That said, I’ve always kept my CDs in racks, protected from direct light.

Are you certain the lasers were actually defective?
I’ve often found that the problem was simply the grease on the guide rails hardening after a long period of disuse, or that the lens mechanism just needed a careful blast of air to clear away dust. Devices with ventilation openings may also have condensation from cooking, smoking, or dust (animals) on the lens, which must be carefully removed.
