You can avoid problems with correct equipment designs. However when you have to deal with incorrectly designed equipment then this kind of thing is done.

I guess I am still not understanding.......in unbalanced interconnections(RCA) the ground or shield or whatever you want to call it is the return path for the signal current. If not connected in even a sneaky or not straight forward way the interconnect will not work. Or have you guys broken through the laws of physics into a new dimension?

The question was about screened twisted pair like you would use for balanced interconnects, but used with RCAs instead for unbalanced. The screen is connected only at one end. The ground uses one part of the twisted pair, and the signal the other.

That's not being argued. What is being argued is that it matters which end you disconnect the shield, because of its effect on the CMRR, which Whitlock explains.

It seems that we are co-mingling several different set-ups.
a] RCA unbalanced single-end interconnects.
b] XLR balanced interconnects.
c] XLR balanced microphone, musical instrument and battery powered component cables.
