I recently learned about this guy called Dr. Ray Peat who over the last 50 years did countless research on our metabolic systems.

Well, as it turns out, he has a cult following, and I am now doing the "Ray Peat diet" and it's incredible. Essentially, if ASR aims to get truly unopinionated hifi audio, then Peat's thesis of bioenergetic living is like truly unopinionated hifi health. It is based entirely in research and zero old wives tales and yet is still the contrarian view to the mainstream like ASR is in audio.

So how does it work? The basic idea is this: Peat discovered that the root cause of most ailments and aging is a slow metabolism. So how do you increase your metabolism? There are lots of ways, but the best way is a diet consisting of high amounts of simple carbs (like sugar), a moderate amount of protein, and low fat (especially no PUFAs [seed oils, nuts, fish]). You also cannot combine fats and carbs together because of something called the Randle Cycle where carbs receive digestive priority, leaving fats to go directly onto your body.

But a high carb low fat diet is only scratching the surface. He also emphasized the importance of vitamin intake and hormone management, and for some, that means going nuts with supplements including regular vitamins but also real exogeneous hormones too.

So why isnt this more popular? Simple. His work is entirely in decades of academic research papers and newsletters and emails to readers and the various Ray Peat forums, and because the mainstream is nearly illiterate, only those going scorched earth with health have shown interest. It's very similar again to ASR where the mainstream shows almost zero interest in research based approaches to hifi audio.

Since joining the Ray Peat club a couple weeks ago I have suddenly had an insane amount of energy every day. For some reason I have needed hours of napping every day since last year but not anymore! Also I have put on incredible amount of muscle and am almost bodybuilder status.

I thought the usual thing is to hint when it is a joke. I was very worried until I read the last two sentences.

Indeed. Why is this here? What has it to do with Audio Science or Engineering. Whilst I'm not a fan of heavy moderation for off-topic posts, sometimes it's necessary.

I see other threads in Information You Can Use called "Cat News" and "Medicare Advantage" and "Let's Talk About Food"- are those related to audio?

I think that it may be important to know what prompted Dr Peat. From googling, "He argues that the standard American diet (SAD) is detrimental to health due to its emphasis on processed foods, refined grains, and PUFAs․ He posits that these elements contribute to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and ultimately, poor health․"

OK. Pretty much anything would be uphill from there. I could name a few things.

But I understand that since you started on the Peat diet just a couple weeks ago you have an insane amount of energy, you have put on incredible amount of muscle and have achieved almost bodybuilder status.

So I won't.

I should note that my exercise is intense, like judo training and high volume acrobatic techniques, so my results aren't typical. However, many others following the Peat way at least report feeling better than before as a result of higher metabolism.

No they're not, and I would raise the same issue about some of those. Off-topic discussions may have their place, but crank diets on an audio science forum?

@amirm What are your thoughts on off-topic discussions?

As best I am aware, this thread falls outside the scope of the audio part of the forum.

Amir generally advises moderators to promote open discussion. He is quite busy so carry on as I am doing my best to ensure I follow his direction. :)

well i hope this thread wont become a long one, because diet list on a audio forum will change me into a woman.

Perhaps you may be correct when you say that your results aren't typical, although I'm sure that you are being modest. This is always an important qualifier to a lot of things.

I'm sure that going cold turkey on the standard American diet as defined by Dr Peat would make anyone feel better (after a period of de-tox which may be a bit painful).

It is well known that chilis/capsicum (in moderation) increases the metabolism, too. There is a proven scientific reason, to do with a chemical that stimulates the mitochondria. Ever felt beads of perspiration after a hot n spicy meal, maybe at that Mexican or Indian restaurant? I'm sure this is covered by Dr Peat, but it may be too political.

This is hilarious, because low androsterone, a hormone important to keep up to have a high metabolism, is correlated with something very similar:

I don't quite understand what the similarity is between magic potions fiddling with one's sexual preference and actually causing a grown man to become a woman. I thank you for the information, but I'll let it slide as this is a family orientated forum.

Speaking as a carbohydrate biochemist (but not a nutritional biochemist), I would be very, very wary of any (any) abstruse diet claims. So many fad diets are essentially managed malnutrition, with desirable short-term effects, but not so great in the long run.

The basics of a good, balanced, and healthy diet have been known for a long, long time and are well worthy of one's attention. The things to avoid are pretty easy to spot. Their labels are typically very eye-catching! ;)

Eat real food. Much of ours comes from our backyard, and we are extremely careful & circumspect in terms of soil amendments.

Not sure if this is germane or not (it is brutally n=1 anecdotal!) but when I was a sophomore in college I weighed 296 lbs (134 kg). As I type this (approaching 5 decades later), I weigh about 168 lbs (76 kg). No crazy diets or Ironman exercise. Just a reasonable diet and reasonable (light!) exercise. And the love of a good woman who gave me a reason to care about my physical condition. :)
