Some early, linear-track video tape recorders were similiarly terrifying, albeit without the razor tape. :eek: When ya need bandwidth on the order of a few MHz, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :)

VERA stored 405-line monochrome television as a linear recording on half-inch magnetic tape travelling at 200 inches (5.08m) per second. The 20½-inch diameter spools gave 15 minutes' recording time.



At about the same time, Ray Dolby et al. at Ampex had the bright idea of rotating the heads past the linearly moving tape to achieve high relative velocity at relatively modest tape speed and revolutionized video tape recording. :)
