On the left is what is supposed to be a soldering iron rest. It's made of sheet aluminum less than 1mm thick and was bundled with the tool by the manufacturer, a well-known U.S. company. It's absurdly light and flimsy -- and thus tends to slide around, which when a 700^+F object is involved can make for serious damage to humans and their nearby belongings.
On the right is my steampunk howitzer -- OK, it's actually the soldering iron stand I put together from bits and pieces I just happened to have around. It is perfectly usable -- very stable and reasonably safe.
