I fell in love with this DAC when I heard it about 15 years ago and I'm still using it today but recently I have been wondering what I might be missing by switching to a more modern DAC like the Topping E70 Velvet.
There is very little info on this model online, I have no idea what chip it uses, but it has been rock solid in several different systems (I had it in a car for a couple of years).
I think I will eventually buy another DAC to compare and disassemble this one to see if I can identify the chip.

Just wondering if anyone here has an opinion on this piece of hardware.
My feeling is that it produces a very natural sound in acoustic instruments (compared to the various other low-end non-discreet DACs I have experienced).

The manufacturer's performance specs look very good even today. Sonically, I don't think you're missing anything. Main reasons for replacing might include features, form-factors, or simply a desire for something new.

Based on the age and spec of the DAC - the spec sheet states 'high speed delta sigma conversion' so I'd hazard a guess at a Cirrus CS4398 chip, probably along with the CS8416 receiver.
