I have the larger JBL 580's and I love them. I have had quite a few different speakers in and out of my system over the last 4 years and I consistently prefer and have kept the JBL's. I think the JBL studio 5 series speakers are a monster value (except the wimpy center). I like Ron's videos and I'm curious to see what Danny Ritchie thinks about the speakers.

Paid $850 for new 530s and two lightly used 310s subs. Really couldn't be happier. Crown XLS2502. Moving house so haven't yet equalized them but darn good out of the box.

Maybe the drivers with No-Rez or other DIY sandwich with damping material as the mod of Klipsch Forte III, by Tyson.

In my Big loudspeakers I made the same many years ago but with only with damping material: Tecsound SY-70.

Others too: https://www.google.com/search?q=driver+speaker+damping -> Google Images

Or, you could use Dynamat to put on the outer surfaces of the metal driver baskets. Danny Richie of GR recommended the option of doing that mod on the Klipsch RP600M woofer/driver to keep it from ringing.

Problem with Dynamat: it is expensive. There are other options cheaper. Search in Amazon.

Neat review. I am a fan of my 580's, the middle big bro to the 530's.

The 530's share the same compression driver with the 520 center channel. The 570,580, and 590 all share a different compression driver.

Be sure to try 45 degrees pointed at the opposite side-the reflection off the wall should be closer than the speaker. The right ear gets the LEFT channel first(sorta). I also like a smaller version where I point the LEFT channel at my right seating position.

I've always understood the whole 5 series shares the same compression driver, one of their attractions. After seeing your post I recently confirmed this with Harman, too. I have 590s/580s/530s/520C FWIW and one reason I bought them. You have something else to go on?

Just counting the number of components of the crossover and its complexity, it was evident that it was not worth it for loudspeakers of that price range. In addition to the complexity of disassembly.

The service manual says they are diff parts. Maybe the guts are the same and the mounting is diff?

edit: anyone have a 570, 580, or 590 and want to compare the compression driver to the one in the 530?

The 520c center should have the same part as the 530 too.

I suspect it could be something like that in a p/n difference.

Compare how? :)

I just wonder if there is a weight or size difference. If someone wants bonus points REW measurements would get you a gold star.

Why make 2 different compression drivers? Is it the marriage to the smaller driver why? Or is it cost-cutting for the cheaper end of the line?

Pretty sure they're the same exact compression driver.

The older JBL Eon Series used the same compression driver and had a different part # for it. Below is diagram from JBL Eon 510.

I haven't had any problems with port noise since I switched over to the Crown XLS 1002. It was pretty bad when I had them connected to the Sony STR-DH190.
