Because enjoyment is more important than accuracy.
But only for the reproduction side and not even for everyone. It would be completely silly to do that in the creation/production side.

The very fact that I know I am listening to accurate reproduction brings me enjoyment.

Well, both of you are correct.

We know from Toole and Olive's research that accurate speakers are a strong predictor for listener preference. But this is with the provision that the recordings themselves are neutral, and the room hasn't modified the tonal balance of the speaker too much, and that the listener has normal hearing. If any of the provisions are off, then the listener may prefer something else. Not to mention, some people just have weird taste and preference.
