Hans Zimmer uses them too. Personally i don't mind them if you fill in the dip at 4k. Still, it's an old school design philosophy... their plate amps are very reliable though.

What would you say the pros and cons of old school design philosophy?

Only pro i can think of is if you're working with these speakers is that you know them and can get them to translate reliably and predictably. Or they have a kind of sound you vibe with when doing creative work. I'm no speaker designer but if you're starting out get something modern and go from there and maybe adjust them to taste.
