Quality recordings

I’m 67. Have been intrigued by music equipment for more than 50 years. Haven’t had a lot of money to spend until recently with”a lot” being a relative term. I have been through cassettes, vinyl, 8 track to CDs. I have listened to the music I grew up with over the years on systems that were not “transparent”. But I have now graduated to that kind of system. And I have to say one “artist” stands out. You may not like their music but harry wayne cast and Rick finch (kc and the sunshine band) but wow is it really, really well recorded. Produced? Engineered? Mixed? Mastered? Don’t know what term to use. First album 1974 blows most any thing else away no matter when it was recorded. By a couple of 24 year olds. With almost no money to work with. Musicians all in the same place at the same time. Even if you don’t like this type of music, listen to it on your thousands of dollars systems. Mine? Genelec 8330s. Svs 3000 sub. Fosi zd3 DAC. Smsl pl 150 transport. Total cost 3 grand.

Cables are cables. There is no difference in sound quality.

In my wall ?

I would not know... it was in there when I bought the house. Solid copper and 2.5mm VD that's all I know.
Of course I use audiophile mains fuses and ripped out the automatic circuit breakers.... or was it the other way around ?

As a follow up to my kc and the sunshine post, I have listened to more recent “recordings” circa 1994 (rhythm. Country, and blues produced by Don Was) and “Your. Heart’s in Good Hands by Al Green which has no date per the liner notes but when I squint I see 1995 on the back of the cd case. I would like to tell you who was “at the controls” but the line notes make it impossible to determine. My point is that both of these recordings were made at least 20 years later than the kc recordings. While both sound good, the sound is “between the speakers”. The kc recordings are “outside the speakers”. Less tech. I’m almost positive less money to record. The ultimate point… that’s where I ask you.

At a guess I'd say these were artistic choices rather than anything to do with more or less tech or money.

They are quite different types of music.

Anyone on ASR can probably list hundreds of good recordings. It would be quicker to list the bad ones.
