A flac file in x kbs turn it to alac and keeps the bitrate. Can be 1411kbs 2822kbs 4xxx kbs, 1444kbs sounds light years better than any 320kbs mp3, jerk, not to mention mp3's normally use joint stereo. Flac and alac files are pure stereo always or pretty much always.
Keeps the bitrate? That's not even how compression works :D changing algorithm will certainly change the variable bitrate. Joint stereo is just another compression technique, at high bitrate when decompressed it is most certainly still 'pure stereo'...
You should read a thing or two about how codecs work rather than saying stuff you assume, but don't know any details about.

This has potentially been covered elsewhere, but does anyone have thoughts/objective data re: the sound quality on the 160 GB Ipod Classic? I assume the quality of MP3 is the defining factor, but how does it compare to the "hi-def" models? Hope you all are doing well!

But....why?

My phone stores more data than an iPod classic, regardless of whether it is MP3/AAC/ALAC/FLAC.

Not everyone wants a smartphone. Plus, a properly optimized music player can have a quite long battery life, physical buttons and lower cost hardware.

But apparently there aren't enough of such people for Apple to keep making iPods.

Is this supposed to portray skepticism?

Just joshing (about the smartphone bit). Totally agree about the plus sides of specialist DAPs

A opportunity for @amirm after he ballsed it up the first time round maybe he can re-invent the iPod .

Go dig up the shipping containers of full of Zunes buried in some Malaysian e-waste landfill, upgrade them to "audiophile components", sell them for $2K each.

Hey, if refurbished reel to reel decks for for $5k-$10k it would probably work.

Just think , if the Zune was successful, or even just not a complete embarrassement Amirm would not of had to try to redeem himself with all this ASR stuff.

If he's got a couple of the wonder product in his sock drawer, maybe he could bang them through the flux capacitor analyser thing and give us the TRUTH!
