That's just AB with variable voltage rails to avoid wasting power at lower volumes (and may reduce distortion). Not uncommon.

Interesting! Ok then it's a class A/B
Running a Denon VR 4800 with two outboard Hypex 252 amps though the pre amp section (triggered by the AVR) into KEF R3's. I have a click/pop/snap occurring randomly from my system. It's not too loud, but loud enough to hear obviously.
Questions:
If left alone will this do damage?
How do I determine the source of the problem?

Probably not. Nor was it likely that the OP was getting anything damaged - its was just annoying, I think.
But you say "randomly", which I take to mean not just when powering on/off - if so, there is either a noise source turning on, like a fridge, or A/C and you are picking it up via your mains wiring (for which there is mitigation), or there is a fault.
If you disconnect sources from your amps, do the amps cause that random noise? At least you may narrow down what item in the rig is susceptible.
If the noise is on/off related, it may be down to the trigger - the pulse it makes when switching may be picked up.

I'm going for a class D in the end! I run out of class AB options within my budget and I'd feel stupid spending 3.5k on the AHB2 when I can get a class d with similar or even better specs at a fraction of the price.
I don't need much power, from my experience anything around 150w at 8 Ohms is already plenty
Maybe I'll go mono? like the Apollon nc250mp, are there any real advantages going mono?
if I go for a stereo amplifier I'd probably get the IOM with the NCx252MP

Fred (Boxem ) would be the man to ask re monos but I would believe he would say only aesthetics.

I bought that IOM Stereo Brick in the end.
Sipko from IOM assembled one for me in record time, and it should be arriving today. Really impressive turnaround!
As usual, it was very helpful getting advice from you guys. A pure valve amp may well have its own sound signature, but for a modern, ultra-clean Class AB design like the AHB2, I’m no longer convinced it’s worth the extra money. I liked the idea of owning one because it’s such a cool piece of kit and will probably hold its value well, but the class D outperforms it while costing about 1/7th as much!

Well, ~£3.5K versus £660 (inc VAT) means you saved £2.8k, but that could have bought you slightly better, but entirely inaudible, SINAD numbers and 2/3 of the power output, plus considerably higher electricity running costs.

I was quoting prices for buying in UK - but €4199 does get a lot bragging rights in the pub!Yep,

There would be not much money left in my wallet (to go to the pub) in the first place i'm afraid,

I already found a way more acceptable price online somewhere on a Dutch website (assuming it's new!)
I won't disclose which one, but yeah, with a bit of search/research you can find it at somewhat acceptable prices
