I did not mean to imply all were difficult to insure - it's mostly a few of the newer Chinese brands.
I'll stick with my Citigo for a while, at least until EV batteries get to the next level of price/performance, as my running costs are trivial, depreciation is fine and more or less bottomed (so far under £400 per year over the last 6-7 years), and I like the lightweight driving experience. Besides, try a monster SUV in our Cornish lanes and make new friends!
 
Agreed. Why are so many cars SUV’s anyway. Ugly, cost more, weigh more, use (much) more fuel (e.g. BMW X3 vs. BMW 320i sedan: +30%), insurance more expensive, taxes more expensive, more waste of resources while the world is already going to the dogs. Seems like a flock of sheep story, herd behavior. And very clever marketing of course, selling you something you don’t need, resulting in bigger revenues for the car companies.
People want and will pay for them, so the carmakers will supply them. Imaginary safety improvement might also drive sales. "If I hit another car, I'll just cycle the wiper blades a few swipes and hit the windshield sprayer a few times and move on (smaller car is just a splat on the SUV's windshield).". Question: What is so 'sporty' about them?'
 
VW (Volkswagen) is switching on it's MEB to LFP (LiFeP) batteries, that are cheaper to produce and do not have inherent power (oxygen) to burn buy themself.

I have always been a car guy and like driving so enjoying the car is more important, within reason, than depreciation or other running costs, which I do tend to limit by keeping cars a long time - I have only once kept a car a short time, I couldn't get comfortable in it, other than that usually at least 6 years (and one is now 35).

I am psychologically unable to consider a SUV.

Dunno.. Light weight is good!
IIRC, UK insurance data said you are actually more likely to be injured in an SUV in a crash than in a typical standard family car.

Their traction batteries tend to be heavy, though. Thing is, electric motors can be very efficient compared to internal combustion engines, and that may give them the edge.

My girlfriend drives an BMW I5 for a few years now (she had one of the early ones) without any issue, and it's a very nice car to drive. Her daughter now got the new iX3 and altough it's to new to tell long term impressions, the first impressions is that it's the best electric car that i know.

I been behind the weel of a few brand (Tesla, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Polestar, ...) but BMW has my preference. KIA is also absolutly not bad, and much more highend that most would suspect today with the EV range. Volkswagen is not good in my impression (i drove an ID3) and Tesla also not that good (sound, road behavior and how to use it).

If i was in the market for one, i would get a BMW probally, at least if i have the budget. But the relative cheap KIA EV3 is also a good deal.

It is a fact that SUVs have poorer roll over potential and generally are fitted with tyres that have less grip, which only shows up in an accident situation. SUVs are definitely more likely to crash than cars in any grip limited situation. They used to also have poorer deceleration crush zones leading to worse occupant injury, but that is less of a problem now most are unitary construction. Separate body and chassis is very bad for occupant deceleration injury.
 
Apart from Landrovers, some old Toyatas, pickup trucks and the like, there are hardly any body-on-chassis vehicles in the UK, so the stats here do represent the majority of SUVs. I don't really care, as given a choice, I prefer small & light cars suitable for narrow lanes and difficult parking! And many cities here are quite rightly charging more to park oversize vehicles, and looking at banning them from entering some places. The UK is tiny and over-crowded compared with the US - it's 'horses for courses'.
 
The move to fully electric cars will not be what some lunatic politicians want: A gigantic demolition of privately owned vehicles with a booming EV sale and resulting tax revenue. Instead it will only fill Chinese bank accounts. They already sell their EV's here, at more than double the price the same car costs in China.
I will not go into other, logical arguments, like the electric grid unable to charge all these EV's, the stupidity to burn gas and coal to produce electricity for EV's or the unsolved recycling problems for all he old cars and the new poisionous trash the EV's produce.
The new vision will be a mixed concept.
There will be new and old fuel burners, using long developed, produced and tested alternative fuels, which have been suppresed by politcs, serving their usual, most wealthy lobby.
For any fossil fuel today there is an alternative of better quality, made by alternative concepts. Gas to fuel, electricity to fuel and crop based products. Those are all compatible with a cleaner world, if matched in volume to the existing reality. They only steer the profit in the wrong peoples hands, endangering the long working systems of democracity's institutions.
The fossil fuel company's have the worst management of any industry sector. Their profits are not generated because of good products, but because of an oligopol, squeezing the last Cent from the energy dependent world. In a free, competition-oriented market, those "oil people" are completely lost. That is the cause they dropped out of alternative energy concepts, even having endless capital to invest.

The e-car will not be the great savior leading us into the promised land of electric mobility, but rather an alternative for those for whom it is a good fit.

It is one of the great questions of mankind, why decission making people always want the most expensive, environmentally harmful future for us, instead of a smooth transition into better ways.
For example, in Germany we had well working alternative Diesel and Otto fuels on gas stations. The government ended them by taxing them worse than fossil fuels. Any question for "why" was ignored.
 
BMW is designing an assembly line in a plant in South Carolina that will allow it to assemble the same vehicle with different power trains - based on consumer demand. (gift link below)

 
The idea was that designing just for BEV would make a better BEV. It turns out that the advantages of this are not always apparent compared to converting ICEV to BEV or designing for both at once. Once nice thing about designing for both is that you can put more engineering hours into one platform instead of splitting over two.

My i4, based on a gas chassis, is far superior to our now gone Model Y. It is also superior in many ways to our EX30, on a dedicated platform. It's a lot heavier.

Weight is now determined by battery, not motor.
Future of technology will relieve this, certainly.

Batteries are significant source of the total weight of a battery-electric vehicles compared to vehicles with other power trains.

Perhaps a use of the word relieve with an incomplete explanation.

I take it to mean future batteries with same output will account for a lower percentage of the total weight of a battery-electric vehicle, IF they can store more energy in the same space. This may 'relieve' the vehicle of hindrances to efficiency and acceleration that come with weight.
 
4000 lbs to 5500 lbs seems an acceptable weight range for typically-sized EVs these days. The low COG handles the weight fine. Range is what most people are concerned with, so weight will keep around the same as more energy gets packed in with better battery tech.

I love my Kia EV6, basically an electric station wagon, and I used to do navigation test driving of Mercedes, BMW so yes very pleasantly surprising.
- BMW yes a sport feel but their ergonomics/operation, vomit. Sound systems always sounded like dog poop, even $105k 750 I was driving for a month.
- Mercedes all seemed more relaxed to drive but you could push hard if wanted...OMG up on the twisty road north of the Golden Gate Bridge their driver was just flying downhill, seemed we would die, but the car just STUCK.
- Since some idiot rear-ended my EV6 I drove a dual motor Tesla Y for a month and a half...very very very quick! Ergonomics well some quirks but I won't say bad, just different. Like no creep when put in gear. Very heavy default regenerative braking down to a dead stop, which I totally loved, and haven't found on another EV. I did not like the huge glass roof, I felt it made the car very hot and the AC did not seem to keep up-and it was not even summer!
