SI Units were implemented for universal usage in science.
The request for a universal terminology in audio beyond local preferences might also be in fortune, at least for science.
(Background: most of medical science studies are solely based on database queries with defined terms to search for)

One of if not my favorite Audio Pioneers was Dr. Marshall Leach, deceased Professor at Georgia Tech. He took a lot of criticism for his student handphone policy summarized
below.

If I hear your handphone in my class, then you will receive an automatic F. So don't bother attending after that. Please turn off your handphone before coming to class.

In this case, if you did not give Dr. Leach the respect that he earned, he just took it from you.

As the professor of that class, Dr Leach had the authority to demand respect, issue edicts, and mete out punishments.
You are not our professor and this thread/forum is not your class; you have no authority here; this forum has some rules, but they do not include any respect mandate.

I started this thread and I claim the most articulate post was made by Salt and is contained above. Standardization of terminology would raise the industry standard. Without standardization of terminology, the possibility of confusion cannot be eliminated. Outstanding post! And yes respect must be earned. Unlike many posts including some of mine in this thread, that post commands respect.

Now I have a question. Who has the worst manners, General Richie with respect to you or Grimoire with respect to Steve Mowry (https://pearl-hifi.com/06_Lit_Archive/14_Books_Tech_Papers/Mowry_Steve/)? It seems clear that both individuals attack the person when they disagree or misunderstand and I defended you when General Richie attacked you. The sample size is small but the methodology is similar, attack the person and ignore the issue. Note that General Richie continues to claim that you are confused. The irony to me is that neither you nor I are confused.
This is an internet forum. People are not always polite with me either. I measure their behavior and make a judgement call as to whether it demands sanction.

In this thread, you addressed me but post it in public. If you wanted to be fully respectful, you would have started a conversation with me, not a public post. Still, I didn't mind it and went along. It is the nature of internet forums that some amount of friction will exist per above. Members here can be hardcore, demanding serious discussions and topics. Yours was not in their minds, even if you thought otherwise.

I suggest not dragging this one and creating more friction with membership.

This is not an industry forum; it's a general public forum where people in the industry also participate.

We are doing that with proper measurement of gear. Using the word loudspeaker instead of speaker is not going to get the industry to create better speakers. But measurements will. Those measurements need to be seen broadly. And that happens when we use the same terms that broader set of the population uses. Do otherwise and search engines and AI summaries will ignore you and with it, your message lost in the vastness of the Internet.

It is not by accident that we have been so successful in our endeavor. Others provided measurements. And had objective focus forums. We get ahead of them because there is a ton I do behind the scenes in how I present the data that makes sure our voices are heard.

... and I would argue (as I believe would our host, see screen capture below) that one of the significant purposes of this forum is to have fun.

You state the obvious. Neither of us has authority. What rule did I violate? What is the objective of your post? I don't claim to be your professor, on the contrary, I joined ASR to share information and when one shares information there is typically an opportunity to learn. You are new to me; I have not seen you at any of my threads.

As a matter of fact, my position is the opposite of Dr. Leach's policy. If I don't get the respect that I have earned, I just will not attend the class. There is no grade to be had and I graduated with Highest Distinction BS (3.91/4.00) & MS (3.92/4.00) EE from URI at 43 years old and went right to work at Bose as an R&D Engineer 3 within the TRES Group. My MS project at URI was a ribbon transducer built in the EE Lab. I did vapor deposition of Al to create the diaphragm in the Material Science Lab. My advisor was Dr. Leland Jackson, a DSP pioneer from Bell Labs. I was the first URI grad to work in Bose R&D. One of just 3 Transducer Engineers at Bose at that time. Most of my colleagues were from MIT.

If I have something to post, then there is LinkedIn where I have 7,646 followers. On LinkedIn, I can block comments rather than hecklers blocking me and the user interface is more friendly. I am 75 years old and retired, I don't need ASR to market myself. I have nothing to sell. I came here to share and have fun.

I was also a Teamster for 17 years and I do not claim to always be polite but I am a champion for the advancement of the Loudspeaker Industry. Sadly the Loudspeaker Industry is decades behind the other associated A/V Industries.

I just posted this thread on LinkedIn, https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-mowry-0959176/recent-activity/all/. So 7,646 followers will be notified.
