Hi everyone! I am thinking of buying a Project debut carbon evo turntable that comes with a Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. To pair with it I currently have an Ifi Zen Air Phono Pre amp, a Denon PMA 600 NE amp and a couple of Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 speakers. I wanted to ask you if you think it could be a good match. Also if you think that a cartridge upgrade is worth it, and which could be good options. I live in Paraguay so not every cartridge is available on the market. Thanks in avance! Alejandro

A different cartridge will probably sound different. There are usually frequency response differences. The load capacitance (cables & preamp) also affect frequency response. It's hard to say if a "better" one will actually sound better. When I was playing records 40 years ago the frequency response on the records varied more than the difference between "decent" cartridges, with most records sounding "dull" and the good ones being rare. But I assume modern records are more consistent. But IMO, the smart solution is EQ (or regular tone controls) rather than looking for a perfect cartridge.

And some cartridges may work better (less distortion) on hard-to-track records.

I were buying a turntable, I'd get direct drive. (No belts or drive wheels to wear out.) My 40-year old direct drive Technics still works fine, although I only use it to very-occasionally digitize a record that's not available digitally.

The only times I've heard any difference or problem from the turntable itself it was a cheap "record player" with a plastic platter and I could hear "rumble". Or when a worn belt or drive wheel caused slowing and speed variations.

Alejandro, es un tocadiscos decente ... y más que vale cambiar a la ortofon blue. Es solo cambiar la aguja, no necesitas cambiar la cápsula entera.

English: is a decent turntable ... and is a worth upgrade to change the stylus for the ortofon blue, you don't need to change the cartridge.

It's not a meal, not a lot of "pairing" going on. All the components should work fine with each other. That cartridge can be upgraded by changing the stylus assembly (going further up the Ortofon cartridge hierarchy, Blue would be next one up the chain), whether it's worth the expense you'll have to judge for yourself. Do you have an existing vinyl collection to play or ?
