Prices of Very Large Flat TVs are Falling Fast

;)Holy Moses.
€0.75 spent per day on electricity.
A coffee at the bar costs me €1.30… ;)
This evening it will be entirely used to watch the Champions League.

It has to do with manufacturing.

The battle now is between Korean and Chinese manufacturing.

Each new fab is a large capital cost that is spread over years of production, with oversupply dynamics. Fabs have to be built next to glass substrate factories. The glass substrates are classified by size in "Gen" - generation. Current OLED Gen 8.5 is 2200x2500mm. Current LCD Gen 10+ is 2840mm x 3370mm.

The substrate size controls the finished panel cut mix. The larger the finished panel, the greater probability of pixel defects. Then you need a sales channel to get some revenues from panels with pixel defects. The competition between LCD and OLED will go on for some time. Roll up OLED systems are a great solution to the big screen dominating the room problem, and shipping and installing big glass screens. Roll up will have its own quality and durability challenges to be solved.
Quite correct. That is why LG is getting to extreme pricing on their 97" model - much more than current 115" mini LED class. If I recall correctly OLED was also supposed to build larger lines, but due to cost that was axed couple of times. I think it is safe to say that OLED gave up on the battle for larger formats aka 98" class and above. Competition in that area is quite overwhelming now.

@Power Pop 23 - I believe that is correct, as well as the fact that you have some really deep pockets behind TCL/Hisense that are accelerating the pace of hardware advancement beyond anything that I have seen before. That also involves the panel drive systems that seem to go light speed forward every generation.

As a consumer, I don't really care for flags, so welcome all advancements in the large TV format technology and actually quite happy with my first TV that is native Chinese. I might admit that I am not so happy that my TV might be considered an ugly child after 2025 models are announced, but such is life in the fast lane.

I currently have a 52. Have had it since 2009. Still goes strong.

But considering 65. I typically sit about 7-8ft away... is 65 the right size? Also, speakers are a bit over 6.5ft apart, so the TV can't much more than 62 inches wide or so. I wouldn't want to spend more than $3k, because at the end of the day I don't watch too much TV.

Input welcome! I am no video expert.

I recall the 'packaged' weight of some 100-inch class LCD TV's slightly exceeding 200 pounds. Select retailers like Costco have advertised installation is included with the price. I wonder when it will become practical for retailers to deliver and install a TV with a panel larger than 100 inches

Well, it really depends what are your preferences. Below might help. I would personally go bigger.

I have a 2009 plasma still fooling select visitors that they are viewing an OLED TV - until they notice the width of the bezel. A newer (4K) TV can provide a number of enhancements to improve overall picture quality. There are a lot of choices in the 65-inch size to fit your budget. I will let videophiles chime in on a short list of TV's to consider.

I have installed TCL 98x955 and it was a project I underestimated and should have had 3 man crew instead of two of us.

The weakest point in the installation was holding almost 80kg panel to put it on VESA wall mount. They have addressed that with 115" model that has the screw in handles on the sides. If they include that on future 98" models, that would be a piece of cake.

The packaging of the TCL 98x955 was sublime. Much better than the previous Sony 83" 90J OLED.

I had a 37-inch Vizio that weighed enough that carrying handles are molded into the back panel. I recall seeing molded handles on the back panel of one 100-inch TV. I hope it becomes a more common feature.

Ditto

The shape of my room and the placement of the Front L/R loudspeakers has determined that my display cannot exceed 85 inches in size

Nice. My TCL 98 allowed me to dismantle my 4K projector setup. Better picture quality and family can now watch with the curtains open during the day.

My wish list includes a large TV manufacturer using a Klippel NFS to design a model that can offer audio playback to rival a dedicated center channel.

Damn, your exactly where I'm at. I can't fit in larger than my Samsung 85" and still have it centered between the L & R speakers.
Guess I'm now stuck with this little thing. :p

Which model TCL do you have ?

Which model TCL do you have ?
That's EU model from late 2023, I guess it is US 2024 TCL flagship called QM8 or something? 5k nits and zones for 98". Not perfect but pretty good.

I wish they had less confusing release schedules and model names.

Must have a projector!
A large TV consumes twice as much as a UST projector, cannot be moved easily, does not have a lifespan of 30,000 hours.
