Prices of Very Large Flat TVs are Falling Fast

The good TV set is no TV :)

I use a Xiaomi projector with androïd TV. It's a very small box.
And a white wall as a screen.
Sound is enough good for me and i can add a bluetooth speaker or anything else.

and that don't look ugly when not in use. Actually your solution is neat, a drop down curtain/screen with art would erase that huge 83" black slab on my wall.
To be actually effective it would need to be several inches thick.

Could be painted to look like art, of course. Though a monocolor rectangle can also be art.

And there’s that one nasty dilemma with it all:

While TV sets are getting bigger and better, the broadcasted content is kind of moving in the opposite direction.

That’s one reason for me to stick with 32-inch-cuties ;)

I have my tv between my speakers but on the same plane, if that makes sense. Ie there's a gap between the rear wall and the rear of the tv.
Probably not, but I like to think it may be a bit like a cheapo version of soffit mounting...
The large TV unit is similar, such that the speakers are effectively soffit mounted on the inside, at least. Partially so, on the outside too. Hopefully it helps avoid reflections from the front wall somewhat...

Yes back in the CRT era Sony was extremely respected for their tubes.
Ahhhh, I still have great memories of our family's 27" Trinitron XBR. That was a fantastic beast. Panasonic and JVC also had some really good CRTs back in those days.

I still have a ~20 year old Samsung LCD that is going strong as a secondary TV and the Panasonic Plasma I got for my parents around 15 years ago is incredible and I'm still a bit jealous I don't have one.

These days, I've been impressed with the quality of picture and low prices I've seen for TVs but I can't bring myself to go with anything but LG OLEDs. The quality is getting to the point where it's like DACs that someone else mentioned earlier and you can get a really good picture for very little money. But since I buy things and keep them around as long as possible, it's worth it to me to pay a little extra to know I'm using the same panels that are widely used, developed with and adopted by many in the M&E industry.

This is also true for me. I was looking at some 98” TVs but settled for the 83 LG B4 that’s on sale for $2499. My old tv was a 65” LG C7 that developed a little burn in. I thought this was a great deal and it really completes my system in my family room.

I think a QLED / mini-LED could be better for my room with the reflections but I felt more comfortable with getting the OLED because I’m so used to it and it turned out to be the right decision. I fell like I’m at Best Buy everyday now .

Well, hopefully you calibrated it so it doesn't look like it does at Best Buy but I get what you mean! :p

I am also a major LG OLED fan, have a 55” purchased in 2019 that continues to amaze me with its picture. Now looking for a new addition >70” for the new HT I am building up. But I have read recent reviews and it seems Sony has now taken the crown from LG as best OLED, so will consider it in addition to LG

In all honestly, nothing changes gaming quality as an OLED monitor/TV. There is where HDR really shines and where frames per second, beyond a certain point, do not improve the experience.

I was looking at an 80'' screen the other day, now less than £2K

But would need to take out some shelving and do some other re-arranging to fit it in.

Don't desperately feel the need since most of the programmes I watch were made in the 1970s. Maybe when my 55'' dies but not before. Probably be able to get an 80 for fifty quid by then!

Still have a 1980s Sony Trinitron monitor in full working order. Weighs as much as a small moon.

As mentioned before, Sony has always been a major player in the TV/Monitor game so not surprising but as far as I heard, they get their OLED panels from LG but of course, they could put their own touch on things. I haven't paid attention to it most recently but I'll have to look into that since I'm always curious about OLED and display technology.

Yes, while they do use the same panels, Sony's image processing and motion handling is slightly superior to LG. Hence the difference. However, LG has been catching up now, from what I have heard.

I think Sony just dropped the price on their 77” to $2199 to compete with LG C4. My buddy bought a Sony a few years back because of its superior video processing. This 83 B4 is the only model in the B series to have the same processor as the C series but not sure how much better that means vs the other B4 TVs. The 77B4 is down to $1699.

I’m not that hung up on absolute picture quality but I was waiting for the 83G4 to drop to $400 but it’s still at $5000. Once the 83B4 dropped to $2500, it was a no brainer - I only planned on buying an 83.

Edit: I meant $4000 lol

What I don’t understand is why LG sells their panels to Sony or Samsung. This must be a better business plan that I don’t understand.

LG had rights, manufacturing capacity, and trade secrets but their TVs were never known to be huge sellers like Samsung and Sony. Plus with those names the relatively new tech would get tons of distribution. They knew they were in fast moving LED flat panel race as now it seems their competitors tech is rapidly catching up in picture quality.

It is my speculation that offering OLED 'technology' to Sony and Samsung may further 'legitimize' OLED TVs in the eyes of some consumers who are unaware Sony and Samsung are procuring their OLED panels from LG Display.

What we really need is big TVs that comes with an acoustically absorbant panel that drops over them when not in use.

Yeah, that'll go flying off the shelves.
